The Metal Gear Solid creator isn't tipping his hand Image: Kojima Productions/Xbox Game Studios Sign in to your Polygon.com account More than four years after its initial announcement, OD remains one of the biggest mysteries in the video game industry. We know Kojima Productions’ next game is some sort of horror experience, and that genre auteur Jordan Peele contributed to the project, butspecifics are hard to come by. Despite the caginess, we got a new look at OD as part of Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary exhibition, which is running through Dec. 20 at Azabudai Hills Gallery in Tokyo. A new promotional image for the exhibition shows Sophia Lillis’ character looking at a levitating red object that could be a broom or something else. The tagline reads, “For all players and screamers.” While the image doesn’t offer much to go on, the floating red broom may hint at the style of occult mystery that OD is going for: witchcraft, ghosts, and other paranormal phenomena seem to be on the table. What do fans think the new OD image means? Many fans are assuming that the floating red object in the teaser image is a reference to witches. "Is that a broomstick?" one Reddit user wrote. "It’s the same red as Hunter Schafer’s costume in the last image release. Could she be some sort of witch? Wouldn’t predict witches but with Kojima I wouldn’t rule out anything.” The red is also the same red as the door shown in OD’s Knock teaser video from last year. “So Hunter’s character is a witch and she hijacked a plane full of people and the plane went missing. Calling it now!!!” another user said. Others commented on the teaser's aesthetic. “The vibe this image gives off is brilliant. Instead of the generic dark and gloomy here we have something bright and surreal,” reads one comment. “I might be getting ahead of myself here but I think this game is going to be something special.” One big point of debate for fans is whether the shot is an in-game render or a live-action photo. Fans were divided, with some thinking it was an in-game screenshot that showed the fidelity of MetaHuman’s 3D facial capture technology, while others believed details like the hair are simply too realistic to have been rendered in-engine. What else do we know about OD so far? While it hasn't been officially confirmed, there's a rumor that OD will be made up of multiple episodes handled by different writers, with OD: Knock being Kojima's part. Kojima previously said that the game will bring together an "Avengers" team-up of horror writers. The most substantial look we’ve gotten at OD so far was the teaser trailer released last year. The trailer begins with redacted text that hints at curses. "This building was [redacted] from a 3D scan of an [redacted] found in an [redacted]," the subtitles read. Lillis’ character opens the door to a dreary apartment that feels reminiscent of the horror game P.T. She begins to light candles. Lillis fumbles with the candles as a persistent knock on the door grows louder. Eventually, the door behind Lillis’ character opens and the camera cuts to her horrified face. She becomes increasingly covered in strange marks as a blurred creature approaches from behind and clasps its hands on her face. The new teaser image shows Lillis against a beige wall that calls to mind the blank walls of the apartment from the trailer. Combined with other promotional images, the game seems to contrast mundane backdrops with surreal imagery. Kojima Productions’ ongoing 10th anniversary exhibition seems to offer more hints about the game, and while photography isn’t allowed at the event, images have leaked. One album posted on Reddit shows the red door from the trailer, along with cards that have dares written on them. More information about OD may be hard to come by until we get closer to release. Kojima recently said in a podcast that he wants to just “keep quiet" and release the game to maintain a sense of "mystery."
