4 min readRemember a decade ago when Kevin Durant left Oklahoma City to play for the Warriors? Or when LeBron left Cleveland to join the Heat? Something of that magnitude happened in the world of video games this summer, with one of the industry’s most celebrated auteurs taking his talents—and his mysterious project, titled Physint—from one major platform to its direct rival.Yes, we’re talking about Hideo Kojima, Kojima Productions, and how their upcoming game went from PlayStation—where it was meant to be an exclusive—to Xbox. In case you missed all of this and how it went down recently, here’s your handy catch-up on Kojima, Physint, and the drama surrounding the defection to Xbox.First, the news: On the morning of September 17, Xbox woke up the East Coast with a presentation of its slate at the 2026 Tokyo Game Show. Saved for last was Physint, a new game from famed developer and known cinema obsessive Hideo Kojima, who created the Metal Gear Solid games and the star-studded sci-fi series Death Stranding. Kojima provided updates on his next two games, OD and Physint, including a major Hollywood actor as the main character in Physint.First, the other game: OD. Exclusive to Xbox since the start of development, Kojima said work on OD is coming along. “Performance capture and ADR recording, which had been paused during the SAG strike, resumed this year, and production is proceeding on schedule,” he said in the video. The horror game stars Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schaefer, and the late Udo Kier (in a posthumous appearance), and is co-written by filmmaker Jordan Peele. OD currently doesn’t have a release date, but it is on tap to be the very next game from Kojima Productions. And now, Physint. It’s another new video game from Kojima Productions and is set to release after OD. While details regarding the story, its characters, and its universe are shrouded in mystery, Kojima himself confirmed the game is an original IP that is poised to be a spiritual successor of sorts to Metal Gear Solid.Physint was first announced in January 2024 as a PlayStation exclusive, when the brand gave Kojima a major spotlight during its State of Play presentation. During the reveal, Kojima described it as “a next-generation action espionage game.” Although Kojima didn’t reference Metal Gear Solid by name, he cited his extensive history with Sony in “grow[ing] the espionage genre together for almost 30 years.”For two and a half years, all seemed sunny between Kojima and PlayStation. But on September 9, 2026, Kojima posted on Twitter/X that the fate of Physint had changed. “As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project,” Kojima wrote. “PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner.”In that same tweet, Kojima announced that Xbox—already a partner on OD—had stepped up for Physint. “In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward.”On September 11, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported that a “major factor” behind PlayStation and Sony’s shock decision was the low sales of the studio’s previous two titles, Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2. The games “didn’t meet PlayStation’s revenue expectations” according to Bloomberg’s anonymous sources. But Death Stranding wasn’t the only cause behind Physint’s demise at PlayStation. Bloomberg wrote that development “has also missed deadlines and was on track to be well over budget” while its release was still “years away.”Wrote Schreier: “PlayStation was reluctant to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in another game that wouldn’t remain permanently exclusive to the company’s own hardware ... Kojima’s closely held studio, Kojima Productions, retained ownership of the franchises.”In September 2025, actors Don Lee, Charlee Fraser, and Minami Hamabe were announced as the first actors attached to Physint. Now, during the Xbox TGS showcase, Kojima announced actor Bill Skarsgård has joined them, in the role of the still-unnamed main character and player avatar for Physint. “We are both long-time fans of each other’s work, and we’ve decided to embark on this new adventure together,” Kojima said in the announcement. “There are still many exciting cast announcements to come in the future, so please stay tuned for further updates.”There’s still plenty to learn about both OD and Physint. While the former sees Kojima wading into horror (as he once almost did in his canceled Silent Hill game), the latter sees Kojima going back to his Metal Gear Solid origins to deliver a spy-oriented action game. Earlier this year, IO Interactive released 007 First Light—based on the James Bond franchise—to critical and commercial acclaim. But Kojima’s unsubtle political themes and frequent interest in future technologies will surely make Physint its own beast in the genre.
