In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds revealed that Alice is a lifelong soccer devotee whose nagging ACL injuries forced her to transition from player to coach. “A lot of the series’ arc for Alice is about her finding her best kind of coach self and learning how to better communicate and be vulnerable with the team,” Reynolds told the outlet. “I was very interested in this idea of this character who is very brittle and spiky on the outside but inside is actually quite wobbly.”While Ted Lasso has famously cast football vets before—such as Cristo Fernández, who played association football in Mexico prior to Ted Lasso (and is now playing for the El Paso Locomotive)—Reynolds admitted she is far less athletically gifted. “I got really paranoid because the thought of me playing a coach is quite hilarious to anyone who knows me,” she told THR. In speaking to Sudeikis in a follow-up Zoom call, “I was like, ‘Listen, man, you’ve not met me, but I’m not this character. I can give it a go, but I’ve never kicked a ball in my life.’ And Jason just was very Ted Lasso about it, like, ‘Well, I think you are.’ ”Can Ted Lasso recapture the magic of its first season in 2026? Right now, no one can say for sure. But if the series taught us anything, it’s to believe in believe.
