Here's why your Plex server feels slow even on Ethernet, and a $10 fix is the answer

Your raw, uncompressed media running on a wireless connection can often experience sudden dips if something else in the house demands a burst of bandwidth. That's why Ethernet is preferred on TVs if you can route a cable to your media room. However, another spanner in the works is the ancient 100 Mbps LAN port on most TVs, even in 2026. This bandwidth may be enough for Netflix streaming, but not always for lossless 4K Blu-ray remuxes. You need to bypass your TV's Ethernet port with a faster one if you want a rock-solid Plex (or Jellyfin) experience. You hardwired your TV, but your Plex stream is still not perfect Local lossless media can exceed your TV's LAN capabilities Wi-Fi speeds have reached multi-gig standards in many parts of the world. Even if you have a 300 Mbps connection like most US homes, it's considerably faster than what you need for conventional streaming. Apps like Netflix compress the stream significantly, bringing it down to around 25 Mbps, allowing almost any internet plan to support it. Local media enthusiasts running a Plex or Jellyfin server, however, often need a lot more bandwidth. Uncompressed 4K Blu-ray files can demand peak bandwidth of up to 200 Mbps if you factor in occasional spikes. Your Wi-Fi may be fast enough to accommodate this bandwidth, but it'll never be as stable as a wired connection. Ethernet removes the myriad of wireless complexities linked to congestion and interference, giving your TV a direct line to the server. The problem is that most TVs still feature a 100 Mbps Ethernet port. Even if your Plex server is wired directly to the TV, you can still encounter buffering when the stream shoots past 100 Mbps. You may wonder why the supposedly flawless Ethernet connection is letting you down, but the issue is simply the dated hardware of your TV. A cheap Ethernet adapter is your way out All the benefits of Ethernet without your TV's constraints Your friend might recommend buying a separate streaming box to enjoy faster Ethernet capabilities, but you don't need to spend that much if you just want a faster Ethernet port. A USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide you with a Gigabit LAN port for under $10, and it's usually plug-and-play with most LG, Sony, and Android/Google TVs. This cheap and simple adapter allows your server to transmit your local media at Gigabit speeds, as long as your TV has a USB 3.0 port. Older TVs might have USB 2.0 instead, but even that's capable of a theoretical 480 Mbps connection with your media server. Even if you get real-world LAN speeds of around 300–400 Mbps, that's at least triple what you were getting before, and more than enough for running any 4K Blu-ray remux. They became the minimum on budget motherboards years ago; there's no reason for expensive TVs to stick to legacy LAN ports anymore.
