Here’s what we know about ‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’

KPop Demon Hunters 2 is in the works because, well, how could it not be? Since it began streaming on Netflix on June 20, 2025, the original has become a global pop culture phenomenon that’s been viewed over 325 million times, making it the most-watched title in the streaming giant’s history. Leading the way, of course, was HUNTR/X’s dance-pop banger ‘Golden’, which won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards and has now accumulated 1.895 billion Spotify streams. The voices of HUNTR/X even got to perform it at the Oscars. The directing duo behind the original KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, are already working hard on the hotly anticipated sequel. So here’s everything we know about it so far. When could KPop Demon Hunters 2 come out? There’s currently no release date – and we might have quite a wait. Though Variety reported in November 2025 that Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation (SPA) were targeting a 2029 release, SPA’s president Kristine Belson has since intimated to The Hollywood Reporter that this could be wishful thinking. No one involved is dragging their heels, it’s just that animated movies take a long time to make. Who could return for the sequel? Recommended There have been no casting announcements yet, but the sequel’s creative team are surely working hard to secure the voice talents of Arden Cho (Rumi), May Hong (Mira), Ji-young Yoo (Zoey), Ahn Hyo-seop (Jinu), Yunjin Kim (Celine), Joel Kim Booster (Romance), Daniel Dae Kim (Healer Han), Ken Jeong (Bobby) and Lee Byung-hun (Gwi-Ma). Meanwhile, given that she won Best Original Song at the Academy Awards for co-writing ‘Golden’, singer-songwriter Ejae will almost certainly be back as the singing voice of Rumi. Let’s hope she’s already cooking up some bangers, too. What could the songs sound like in KPop Demon Hunters 2? Again, it’s too soon to tell, but co-director Maggie Kang has spoken about wanting to broaden the palette of musical styles to include heavy metal and the traditional Korean genre trot – which gets its name from the American ‘Foxtrot’ and shares its familiar two-beat rhythm. “My thoughts haven’t changed regarding the use of trot and heavy metal,” Kang told The Korea Times. “Trot is a unique style of Korea that I want to introduce more to the world, and heavy metal is a base of K-pop that I want to showcase if the story allows.” What have the directors said about KPop Demon Hunters 2 so far? Very little, though this is probably because ideas are still taking shape and production on the sequel is a fair way off. “We are currently holding onto some big ideas for the sequel,” Kang said at a press conference in Seoul in April 2026. “While we cannot reveal specific details yet, we plan to make a film that is even bigger in scale and more eventful than the first one. Just like the first one, we are making a movie that we personally want to see.”
