Coconut is the new Disney Lorcana format that's just gone into open beta, but will hopefully be a staple of the game soon. This new way to play is best enjoyed in groups of three or four and slightly adjusts the base game's rules. I'm going to take you through all the differences between Core Constructed and Coconut, so that you're prepared for your first game and can jump in without any issues. If this format ends up following in the footsteps of Magic: The Gathering's Commander, it will become hugely popular in no time andmany players' default format for its social upside. Coconut is a new format that lets you build a 60-card deck and select a "Coconut," the term for special cards designed to lead decks in this format. This card uses a single ink color, and you may build your deck with this color and up to two others. The effects of your Coconut card are always active; the card does not need to be played. In fact, it's never played; it's just a representation of a powerful effect that impacts your deck. This format can be played using the official Disney Lorcana app, where 18 Coconuts have been unlocked. The objective is to reach 25 lore before any of your opponents to win the game. Differences Between Core Constructed And Coconut There are a few key differences between Core Constructed and Coconut, some of which I've already mentioned, but I'll address them more explicitly here. The use of the Coconut card Three ink colors legal in a deck by default Win target is 25 lore rather than 20 Recommended for three or four players While there are a ton of comparisons being drawn between Coconut and Commander in Magic: The Gathering, Coconut is not a singleton format, and you can follow the same deckbuilding rules as in Core Constructed, only with three colors rather than two, provided that one of those three colors is the same as your Coconut card. The Coconut card is also not a playable card; instead, it just grants your deck a powerful ability. I'll use Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Tailor, as an example. This Coconut card gives all Mickey Mouse cards in your hand, deck, and discard a Shift cost of two. The normal version of this card only has Evasive and can quest for four lore points while also having a strength and willpower of five. Because this Coconut card isn't designed to be in play, it has no ink cost, strength and willpower, or lore value. You can still use up to four copies of Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Tailor in your deck even if you use this version as your Coconut. What's The Point Of Coconut? Coconut is being introduced to create a new, default multiplayer format of Lorcana. While it's possible to play Core Constructed in groups of four, the power level of decks can make it a little tricky to navigate, and games can feel a little formulaic. With the introduction of the Coconut cards, there's an added level of unpredictability and excitement to games, giving it less of a competitive feel and more of a casual party-game atmosphere. Of course, that's not to say that Coconut won't end up being played competitively. Commander has cEDH, so there could be a version or level of Coconut that is highly competitive, maybe even with an organized play aspect, but for now, the open beta is being used to generate player feedback to see if any changes are needed. I fully expect some minor changes from the community, but I don't expect the rule set to changemuch from its current state. I doubt very much it will move away from 60-card decks or toward being a singleton format.
