The actor has addressed Hercule Poirot's movie future, explaining whether he'll ever portray the Agatha Christie character again. Branagh has portrayed the literary detective across three movies in his career, with the Poirot movies each delivering a more stunning mystery than the last. As of writing, these include 2017's Murder on the Orient Express, 2022's Death on the Nile, and 2023's A Haunting in Venice. Each film has been a box office success, while the last two earned considerable praise from critics. In an interview with Adam Barnard on the Mayday red carpet, which Branagh co-stars in opposite Ryan Reynolds, the actor unpacked the future of Hercule Poirot on the big screen, explaining whether he'll ever portray the character again. While emphasizing how much he loves the character he plays, the actor revealed there had been some talk of his appearance in new projects, including an adaptation of Hercule Poirot's Christmas. But, for now, whether he'll actually make a return as the investigator remains up in the air. Check out what Branagh had to say below: I’d always love to return to that pair of mustaches. We developed a few over the pictures that we did. He's such a fascinating character; so complex, contradictory, eccentric, and kind. Agatha Christie always talked about his kindness, as if he was a creation that escaped her and became something else; [someone] very generous. The Christmas story, the last case of his, is a very powerful story. Michael Green, who’s adapted the books for the screen, and Fox Studios have been so supportive of those projects. Any chance to go back would be great! So, we shall see. Poirot stars in 39 major novels across decades of Christie's writing career, solving a variety of mysteries in the process. So far, the movies have all pulled directly from three of them, leaving a number of books ripe for adaptation. Hercule Poirot's Christmas or his very final novel, Curtain, are noteworthy enough for adaptation, and could lead to a memorable swan song for the character under Branagh. However, it appears there's no word yet on how the movies will continue, nor if there's going to be another installment in the series. The movies thus far have told a complete story with the character, A Haunting in Venice ending a story arc for him that was set up as early as the first movie. His demeanor by the end of the latest movie opens the door for a very different type of Poirot taking on his next case, something that could deliver a different tone that would make his next mystery stand out all the more. There's a strong case for the Christmas novel, especially since the latest movie in the franchise was etched in the echoes of Halloween. For now, though, Branagh appears to be focused on other projects, while keeping Poirot in the back of his mind. While he's starring in Apple TV's Mayday, he also has a major role in Michael B. Jordan's remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. Some of his other recent roles include Stuart Simmons in The Devil Wears Prada 2 and as Michael Reid in the drama Atonement, which premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May of this year. But, while Branagh's career has continued to move in a positive direction, it's clear he's still passionate about the idea of Hercule Poirot returning onscreen. Just how long a wait it could be, or when it would happen, remains unclear. But, for now, it seems certain that the actor has ideas for ways another movie could play out, opening the door for more at some point in the future.
