Helogen plans to manufacture medical materials in orbit with autonomous factories in space

Helogen is preparing two missions in October 2026 that it says will advance commercial manufacturing in orbit while beginning a regulatory pathway for biomaterials intended for medical applications. The company is developing autonomous factories in space and plans to use the upcoming missions to manufacture materials for artificial retinas and orthopedic applications. The flights will also generate data that Helogen intends to use as it works toward Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) compliance and eventual U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review. Turning microgravity into a manufacturing advantage Helogen says its approach is based on the unusual manufacturing environment created by microgravity. On Earth, gravity can influence how cells, proteins, and other biological structures organize as they grow. With those forces greatly reduced in orbit, some materials may form in ways that are difficult to reproduce terrestrially. The company’s HEL-IOS platform is designed to automate this process. The orbital system combines cell and tissue cultivation, fluid and media management, environmental control, processing, separation, harvesting, and quality monitoring in a closed-loop system. Helogen also uses CELS, an autonomous analysis system that the company says won NASA’s 2025 TechLeap Prize. CELS uses imaging, spectroscopy, and sequencing to characterize biological production in real time, allowing the company to monitor the manufacturing process with limited human intervention. The October missions will put this architecture to work for commercial customers. One flight will manufacture material for LambdaVision, which is developing a protein-based artificial retina. The mission will be the first time Helogen takes this manufacturing work beyond the International Space Station, building on LambdaVision’s previous microgravity experiments. The second mission will produce Helogen’s proprietary biomaterials for orthopedic repair, including potential knee and shoulder applications. The company says the flights will generate mechanical, structural, and quality data that can be compared with terrestrial alternatives. First steps toward regulated space manufacturing Perhaps the more ambitious part of the October campaign is regulatory. Helogen says the missions will test whether its orbital manufacturing process can satisfy requirements associated with terrestrial GMP production, including bioburden control, material recovery, process consistency, traceability, and documented quality systems. At the same time, the company says it is beginning work toward FDA oversight of its own proprietary materials manufactured in orbit. Data from the missions are expected to help establish the testing and documentation needed for future regulatory submissions. That does not mean the resulting materials are already approved for human use. Rather, Helogen is attempting to establish the manufacturing and quality framework that could eventually allow space-produced biomaterials to enter regulated medical applications. The missions will fly as rideshare payloads, with Helogen working with D-Orbit on one of the launches. The company says the October flights are the first in a planned series of eight missions over the next year, with each intended to validate production, retire technical risks, and build manufacturing data. Helogen ultimately wants to move beyond individual experiments toward an autonomous manufacturing hub in orbit. Its longer-term plans include developing the high-power, thermal-management, and orbital infrastructure required to operate manufacturing systems at much larger scales.
