Leaning even more into the vintage patterns and textiles that shaped her inaugural capsule, the designer particularly emphasized florals applied in repeating motifs, geometric stripes, plaids, and checkered prints.“Everything goes with everything,” she insists. “I view muted, muddier tones as neutrals, and they complement each other really nicely, but they also work really well with unexpected colors, like a bright red or more primary tones.” At the same time, Caillier speculates that the rugs are strong enough to stand on their own. “Sometimes the rug is guiding the design, but often it's the textiles.”The Rothwell (pictured) is a particular favorite of Caillier’s, based on a vintage rug that has lived in her mind rent-free for the past decade. If she may offer some expert advice for getting the balance right, though, she recommends that a rug be large enough to cover the surface area of all your furniture (“[The living room is] where people tend to go too small”) and five throw pillows maximum on one sofa.Other pearls of wisdom for reshaping a room from floor to ceiling? Pairing a great rug with an elaborate window treatment or statement sofa. “That's really the winning mix. You want a sofa that's going to be around for 20 years—and these rugs are such good quality, they're going to be around just as long.”“It's fun to have an idea for what I want the pattern to be, and then figure out what the construction of the rug. It really changes it, says Caillier.
