Heat 2 Cast: Every Character Who Has Been Recast & Who Plays Them In The Sequel

Heat 2 is giving Michael Mann's iconic crime characters a new generation of performers. That is no small task. The original Heat remains one of the defining crime movies of the 1990s, with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and Ashley Judd all tied to the characters they played. Recasting those roles gives Heat 2 a chance to revisit familiar faces, while also showing audiences sides of them the original movie did not explore. Based on Mann and Meg Gardiner's Heat 2 novel, Heat 2 will move between the past and future of the original film. The story reaches back to explore the younger versions of characters like Neil McCauley, Vincent Hanna, and Chris Shiherlis, while also picking up after the events of Heat. The actors the film has chosen are not only replacing the stars of the 1995 movie, but are also filling in major gap years of these characters' lives that audiences have yet to see. Leonardo DiCaprio As Chris Shiherlis Leonardo DiCaprio is taking over Val Kilmer's role as Chris Shiherlis, one of the most memorable members of Neil McCauley's crew in Heat. Kilmer brought a reckless confidence and emotional vulnerability to Chris, especially around his criminal life beginning to put his relationship with Charlene in danger. DiCaprio now gets the chance to explore parts of Chris's life that the original movie never got a chance to. Heat 2 spends much of the plot moving between the years before and after the 1995 film. That means DiCaprio will play a younger Chris as he works alongside McCauley, while also following his attempts to rebuild his life after the events of Heat. He will be portraying Chris in different stages of his life, showing how the ambitious criminal audiences originally met developed into the man left dealing with the fallout of McCauley's final job. TheWrap reported in July that DiCaprio was set to play Chris, though Amazon MGM had not finalized the deal at the time. Stephen Graham As Neil McCauley Stephen Graham is reportedly in talks to take over Robert De Niro's role as Neil McCauley, the calculating professional thief found at the center of the plot in Heat. It's a daunting role, considering how closely De Niro's restrained, intimidating performance is tied to the character. Luckily, Graham will not just be recreating De Niro's version of McCauley. Since much of Heat 2 takes place years before the original film, that allows for Graham to play a younger McCauley as he builds the reputation that eventually brings him to Los Angeles. The story also explores his partnership with Chris Shiherlis, giving audiences a better idea of how the crew originally came together. Graham can play dangerous, complicated characters without reducing them to stereotypical villains, which should serve McCauley's quieter menace well. Graham's casting has not been officially finalized. TheWrap reported that he was in talks for the role alongside the reports of Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale joining the movie. Odessa Young As Charlene Shiherlis Odessa Young Odessa Young is reportedly set to play a younger version of Charlene Shiherlis, the role Ashley Judd played in Heat. Charlene was one of the few people who could pull Chris away from criminal life, making her relationship with him an important emotional thread laced throughout the original movie. Heat 2 will give Young the chance to explore Charlene before the events of the 1995 film, when her relationship with Chris was still in the early years. That makes her recasting a little different from just throwing a younger actor into the role to imitate Judd's performance. Young can establish her own version of Charlene while showing how she became the woman audiences eventually meet in Heat. According to Deadline, Young was Mann's choice for the role, although the casting had not been officially finalized at the time. Adam Driver As Otis Lloyd Wardell Adam Driver is not replacing any of the original Heat's iconic actors. Instead, he is in talks to play Otis Lloyd Wardell, a new character created for Heat 2. That gives Driver something that the other major cast members do not have, which is a completely blank slate. Rather than following in the footsteps of Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, or Val Kilmer, Driver can honestly make Wardell his own without having to contend with an established character. Wardell appears in the novel's earlier timeline, alongside a younger Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis. They are bringing Driver into the story before the events of the 1995 film, which again shows that Heat 2 is expanding Mann's original world instead of just relying on the nostalgia of the characters audiences already love. TheWrap claimed that Driver was in deep negotiations for the role. Jason Clarke As Another New Addition Jason Clarke has joined Heat 2, but his role is still a mystery. Mann has not revealed his character, and that is very notable because in the Heat 2 novel there are plenty of characters who were not in the original film. That leaves a few possibilities. Clarke could be playing one of the novel's new characters, or Mann could be saving the reveal of another familiar name from the book. Either way, he will not have to spin his own take on someone else's character. For now, Clarke's casting is official, but his role is not (via Deadline). With filming still ahead, his character could be a major piece of the Heat 2 cast that falls into place. Eiza González May Be Playing Elisa Image via Lionsgate Eiza González is reportedly being considered for Elisa, a character from the novel who also was not in the original film. Elisa is McCauley's love interest during the story's earlier timeline, which would allow for a closer look at his life outside of his professional work as a thief. Until an official announcement is made, González has thus far only been known to be in the running for the part (via FictionHorizon). Who Isn't Being Recast Yet? One character that is notably still without a new actor is Lauren Gustafson, Hanna's stepdaughter. Natalie Portman played Lauren in the original, and while her storyline was relatively small, it definitely gave audiences more context of the personal cost that Hanna had of her obsessive career. Lauren appears again in Heat 2, which gives the character more room overall in a story that spends time with a younger version of Hanna. That would make the lack of casting news a little surprising, especially with Christian Bale now taking over the role of Hanna from Al Pacino. Seeing a younger version of Hanna alongside a younger Lauren would definitely add some much-needed context to their complicated family dynamic. So far, no actor has been firmly reported for Lauren. There are other supporting characters from the novel not yet announced, so the current lineup is far from complete. With production reportedly planned for November 2026, more casting announcements should come as the movie gets closer to filming. For now, Lauren remains one of the more pressing characters waiting for a new face in Heat 2.
