HBO's Greatest Masterpiece Deserves a Remake, and 'X-Files' Gillian Anderson Is the Obvious Choice

Wherever the film and television coverage takes her, she goes! Jane Schoenbrun’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma features some of the best casting of the year. Hacks star Hannah Einbinder is Kris, an up-and-coming filmmaker hired to reignite a long-running slasher franchise. Gillian Anderson steps in as Billy, the star of the original Camp Miasma film who now lives completely off the grid. In an effort to take a leap forward with the project, Kris decides to pay Billy a visit where she lives — at the isolated summer camp where the Camp Miasma films were made. During the trip, the two strike up an intoxicating emotional and sexual connection, one Schoenbrun expertly weaves into a narrative that playfully and lovingly subverts the concept of the slasher movie remake. With Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma now playing in theaters, Anderson and Einbinder carved out some time for a Collider Ladies Night interview to dig into their experience making the film with Schoenbrun, to look back on pivotal moments of their careers, and, of course, to play the Collider Ladies Night opening game, Dicey Questions. Image via Universal Pictures Einbinder kicked off the conversation by rolling the fan casting question during Dicey Questions. When asked to cast the other in the franchise of their choice, Anderson immediately turned to Einbinder and asked, “Can you sing?” Einbinder hesitantly admitted, "Actually, kinda,” before fully embracing her ability, “It's always hard to be like, yes! But, yeah. I can do voices. I'm able to, like, modulate my voice. I can sing.” From there, Anderson saw her initial idea through and suggested Einbinder join the Pitch Perfect franchise. It turns out, Einbinder is already somewhat prepared to take that leap. She added, “You know what? I actually know that cup thing from summer camp!” Einbinder then took a rather bold swing with her pitch for Anderson. Einbinder turned to an iconic Emmy-award-winning HBO series. “I would love to see Gillian cast as Tony Soprano. Should we actually get a remake of The Sopranos? There's no doubt that question could spark significant debate, but Einbinder might still be onto something. Anderson is a certified powerhouse and master of character complexity on screen. It’s quite easy to believe the two-time Emmy Award winner would soar in a Tony Soprano-like role. While we wait to see if such a part ever lands in her lap, you can catch her commanding work playing the Norma Desmond-like Billy in Camp Miasma. Gillian Anderson & Hannah Einbinder Are a Perfect Duo in ‘Camp Miasma’ "When we started doing the scene together ... I thought, 'Oh, fuck. Here we go!'" There’s a wealth of phenomenal work on display in Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, but there’s still no denying that the success of the film hinged on finding the perfect pair to play Billy and Kris, and Schoenbrun most certainly did with Anderson and Einbinder. They’re electric together. While revisiting the early days of the production, Einbinder stressed that she knew they had something special from the first rehearsal. “We did a rehearsal of the largest scene where the two characters meet, and just from the second we started, Gillian had the force and the magnetism and the mystique and the gentleness, and every layer in Billy that I think was moving and disarming and intimidating, and totally made Kris so enamored with her. That performance affected mine, and I was like, ‘Oh, wow. This is alive.’” Anderson also had high hopes for their collaboration after that rehearsal. She was especially struck by how quickly Einbinder felt so well-suited to the role of Kris. She recalled: “That’s so interesting because I think my reaction, when we started doing the scene together, because of how locked in you were from the beginning and how you were already so quintessentially Kris, I thought, ‘Oh, fuck. Here we go!’ [Laughs] I had the same reaction. You brought so much to that first reading, but also so much vulnerability that I hadn't necessarily read into the kind of quirky, nerdy, awkward aspects of the character, and I was blown away.” Their first impressions of one another were spot-on. That mix of mystique and gentleness that Anderson brings to Billy is beguiling, and the vulnerability Anderson clocked in Einbinder’s work during that first rehearsal is essential to Kris’ evolution in the film. They fit together like puzzle pieces. It quickly becomes clear that they’re a match for one another and see each other in ways that others don’t.
