The lawsuit centers on an edited video of Piker's comments from three separate Twitch streams from 2024, in which the streamer mocked a debater for wanting to return to an era before the Civil Rights movement.WASHINGTON (CN) — Twitch streamer and leftist political commentator Hasan Piker filed a $72.5 million defamation suit on Tuesday against conservative commentator Scott Jennings over his assertion that Piker had said the country should “resume lynchings.”Piker filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, highlighting comments from an Aug. 11 podcast episode of “The Scott Jennings Show,” that mischaracterized a two-year-old video in which Piker says he was reacting to a debate and ridiculing one speaker for espousing nostalgia for an era before the civil rights movement.Piker has become one of the most recognizable political streamers in American politics, becoming a regular boogeyman for Republicans — a shirtless photo of him was broadcast at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention in Texas this summer without any context. He has also been a frequent supporter of Democratic Socialist candidates like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.According to Piker, the Oct. 29, 2024, clip was from a stream mocking a Black conservative commentator’s statement that “woke" district attorneys were harming Black Americans, which Piker sarcastically framed as that commentator asking to “go back to a better time when lynchings were happening.”Piker is represented by B. Gammon Fain of Washington firm Meier Watkins Phillips Pusch.“At a time in our culture when artificial intelligence and sophisticated digital editing are used to create the impression that persons have said things they never said, often causing egregious injury, the law of defamation matters now more than ever, as the law’s only meaningful remedy against such misinformation,” Piker says in his complaint. “Sophisticated political operatives such as Mr. Jennings must be held accountable for publishing deliberate and defamatory falsehoods.”“Mr. Piker was plainly ridiculing the commentator’s position,” Piker adds. “Mr. Piker introduced the remarks with ‘he said,’ laughed as he delivered them, and concluded by questioning the commentator’s argument. His viewers understood the sarcasm.”Piker is specifically seeking $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages.Viewers at the time anticipated the comments could be taken out of context and circulated in bad faith to make it seem as if Piker himself had said them, the political commentator says.“That is precisely what happened,” Piker says in the complaint. “In August 2026, a 42-second video began circulating on social media that combined fragments of three separate Twitch broadcasts. The portions taken from Mr. Piker’s October 2024 stream had been cropped, shortened and rearranged.”On his show, Jennings presented a chyron as a direct quote from Piker saying, “let’s go back to a better time when lynchings were happening,” and further published the same accusation on social media.Piker notes that while Jennings had every right to criticize hime for his political positions and his commentary, Jennings expressly crossed the line by knowingly attributing statements to Piker that he never made.Jennings has regularly engaged in political controversy as a method to boost his engagement and audience, and to ingratiate himself with the Trump administration, Piker says.Fact-checker site Snopes debunked the video shared by Jennings as heavily edited. Jennings has not yet corrected the statements. On Aug. 31, Piker’s attorneys sent Jennings a written demand that he retract the comments. Jennings’ attorneys acknowledged the demand and promised a response, but one never materialized.Piker asserts Jennings clearly acted with actual malice — a legal standard for defamation cases to show that the offender knowingly shared false information or at least with reckless disregard as to its veracity — as shown by his refusal to retract or correct the statements.Further, Piker says Jennings had a financial, professional and political incentive to publish such sensational accusations and gains from directly harming Piker’s streaming business.“By falsely accusing Mr. Piker of calling for the lynching of Black voters, Mr. Jennings portrayed him as advocating lethal racial violence — conduct so inherently reprehensible that the accusation tends to expose Mr. Piker to public hatred, contempt and disgrace,” Piker said.“This is not just about Scott Jennings, although he certainly messed up,” Piker said. “This is about truth in the media. I don’t think you should be a bee to get away with lying like this.”Jennings did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Subscribe to our free newslettersOur weekly newsletter Closing Arguments offers the latest about ongoing trials, major litigation and rulings in courthouses around the U.S. and the world, while the monthly Under the Lights dishes the legal dirt from Hollywood, sports, Big Tech and the arts.Additional Reads
