Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer and the multiple series that feature Titus Welliver's Harry Bosch on Prime Video all come from the same author. Bestselling writer Michael Connelly has penned several novels starring Bosch, who Welliver has played in Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, and Ballard; and Mickey Haller, who is the star of The Lincoln Laweyer, portrayed across four seasons thus far by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. The two characters are not only connected by the fact that they were created by the same author, but also due to how Bosch and Haller are half-brothers in Connelly's novels. However, Bosch is being replaced for season 5. On the Northwest Passages conversation series shared by The Spokesman-Review, Connelly addressed Bosch's replacement in The Lincoln Lawyer season 5. According to the writer, very early in the final season of the Netflix legal thriller series, Garcia-Rulfo's Mickey Haller will find out that he has a half-sister, Emi Finch, played by Cobie Smulders, continuing the cliffhanger from season 4's finale, where the mysterious character claimed to be Haller's sister. Connelly claims that she is a detective, replacing Bosch's dynamic with Haller in this adaptation of the 7th book in the franchise, Resurrection Walk. The author also claims that the change works well. According to a report from Deadline on August 12, Netflix is exploring a spin-off to The Lincoln Lawyer starring Smulders as Emi Finch. The Lincoln Lawyer executive producers Ted Humphrey, Dailyn Rodriguez, and Matthew J. Lieberman were revealed to be writing the script for the potential spin-off. Deadline claimed that Netflix loved the team's pitch and fast-tracked a script. The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 will follow Haller as he takes on the case of a woman who has been wrongfully convicted, according to his half sister, all while dealing with getting to know this family member he had no idea existed all these years. Smulders' character is an original creation for the Netflix series, not existing in Connelly's books. The reason why The Lincoln Lawyer could not use Welliver's Harry Bosch comes down to the rights to adapt the separate characters, with Haller set up at Netflix, while Amazon keeps the ever-expanding Bosch universe apart on Prime Video. The Lincoln Lawyer's planned spin-off at Netflix could continue to feature Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller after the end of the legal thriller with season 5 in 2027. Prime Video's Bosch franchise showed how, as Welliver has returned as the now private investigator in the spin-off Ballard, also confirmed to appear in that series' upcoming second season. For now, it remains to be seen how Bosch's replacement will pan out in The Lincoln Lawyer season 5 before entertaining how Mickey Haller could continue in the Netflix franchise when the spin-off comes around.
