Hannity moans ‘I wish it was two years ago’ and seems to forget Trump cannot run again in odd analysis

Lamenting Republicans’ midterm performance Tuesday night, Fox News host Sean Hannity looked to past presidents’ political comebacks for comfort — seemingly forgetting that President Donald Trump cannot seek reelection.Speaking on a Fox News panel as election results rolled in nationwide, Hannity reacted to signs of a potentially bruising night for Republicans, with control of both chambers of Congress at stake.“I wish it was two years ago,” the conservative host said, referencing President Donald Trump’s 2024 victory, when he won both the Electoral College and the popular vote.“And I can announce I'm not moving to Ireland,” he added, apparently alluding to liberal commentators who had threatened to leave the country if Trump won reelection.Hannity then launched into a lengthy historical analysis that he acknowledged “won’t give conservatives or Republicans any comfort.” His argument: presidents often endure heavy midterm losses before rebounding to win reelection two years later.‘I wish it was two years ago,’ Sean Hannity said on Tuesday night as the midterm election results poured in, pointing to a potentially bruising night for Republicans (Fox News)“Midterms are very, very predictable and the more dominant a personality that a president is, the more dramatic a loss will be in a midterm,” Hannity said.He pointed to Ronald Reagan, who won the presidency in 1980, saw Republicans suffer losses in the 1982 midterms and then cruised to reelection in a 49-state landslide. Bill Clinton, Hannity noted, followed a similar trajectory.“The same thing about Barack Obama,” he continued. “What happened? In 2008, he won. [In] 2010, we had something called the Tea Party. Two years after that, he got elected again. So there is an ebb and flow and a history to this.”But Hannity’s comparison omitted a crucial distinction: Trump is already serving the second of two constitutionally permitted terms. Unlike the presidents the Fox News host cited, Trump cannot seek another term — leaving no prospect of a similar reelection comeback. With many ballots still being counted Tuesday night, early results point to a difficult night for Republicans.Democrats have already secured several pickups, including in North Carolina, where Roy Cooper was projected by The Associated Press to defeat Republican Michael Whatley for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican Thom Tillis. CNN also projected that Democrat Annie Andrews would unseat Republican Sen. Graham in South Carolina. The network further projected that Democrats would regain control of the House of Representatives.
