Sign in to your ScreenRant account Halo is returning in style for the franchise's 25th anniversary, with a re-release of Eric Nylund's epic novel The Fall of Reach — now reinvented as a stunning audio-drama. Published in October 2001, The Fall of Reach was one of the most important Halo books ever written. The game was a first-person shooter, which meant John-117 didn't really get all that much character-work; players were invited to "be" the Master Chief, rather than get to know him as a three-dimensional character. The Fall of Reach is different, though, because it steps into John-117's head. As part of Halo's 25th anniversary, Simon & Schuster Audio is releasing an all-new, full-cast dramatized adaptation of The Fall of Reach (available from retailers like Amazon). Originally published in 2001, The Fall of Reach helped establish the mythology behind the games, revealing the origins of the SPARTAN-II program and the transformation of John-117 into the Master Chief. It has become a foundational work of Halo storytelling and the bestselling audiobook in the franchise. But this adaptation is even stronger, because of stellar voice performances that add even more character into the story. This Is The Perfect Way To Celebrate Halo's History Halo's 25th anniversary has been a high-profile celebration, but The Fall of Reach's audiodrama is one of the best parts of it. This is essentially a prequel to Combat Evolved, not least because it features the return of iconic voice actors from the games themselves: Steve Downes as John-117, Jen Taylor as Dr. Catherine Halsey and Cortana, and Tim Dadabo as the narrator. As someone who's been following this franchise since it began in 2001, I have to say that this experience absolutely blew me away; the dynamic between Downes and Taylor is particularly thrilling. The Fall of Reach is probably the single most important piece of world-building in the wider franchise. It's the foundation of so many plot elements unveiled in the ill-fated Halo TV show, which was sadly canceled just as it got to the Great Ring; but The Fall of Reach does it all so much better, largely because of the quality of Nylund's writing. This is the story that turned John-117 into a character in his own right, exploring how Spartans are created, and it established his creator Catherine Halsey as a dangerous figure too. It's fascinating hearing Halsey's role played by Taylor, more familiar to gamers as Cortana. Oddly, The Fall of Reach also feels more spectacular than Combat Evolved in places. That's because this is war on a galactic scale, as the alien Covenant launch a devastating attack on the most important UNSC base of all. It's even more exciting to see John-117 lead a team of Spartans, even if the outcome — their defeat and the planet's destruction — was pretty much guaranteed. Nylund's plot turned that inevitable defeat into something so emotionally powerful, and it's realized tremendously well in the new audio-book. Releasing on November 10th from Simon & Schuster Audio, it's the ultimate way to celebrate Halo's 25th anniversary.
