(Photo: PTI)HAL Airport in Bengaluru has become the first airport in the country to operationalise the Required Navigation Performance – Category H (RNP CAT H) helicopter approach procedure, a state-of-the-art satellite-guided precision navigation system developed exclusively for helicopters.The advanced navigation procedure, developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), was validated through flight trials conducted by HAL test pilots before receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).The system enables helicopters to fly highly accurate and optimised flight paths, allowing safer operations even in challenging weather conditions.One of the biggest advantages of the new system is its ability to significantly reduce approach time. Helicopters flying into HAL Airport can now complete their approach in around four minutes, compared to nearly 12 minutes earlier, improving operational efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and emissions.According to HAL, the RNP CAT H procedure uses satellite-based navigation instead of relying solely on conventional ground-based systems. This allows helicopters to safely navigate around terrain, buildings and other urban obstacles while maintaining precise flight paths. "The operationalisation of India's first RNP CAT H helicopter approach is a significant milestone for the country's aviation ecosystem.
