The Rhode founder is pledging $5 million toward women’s health research inspired by her own tumultuous postpartum journey. The cause hits close to home for Hailey, who revealed she secretly struggled with premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD, after giving birth to Jack Blues in August 2024. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, PMDD is “a much more severe form of premenstrual syndrome,” or PMS.“After I had my son, I struggled with that a bit, and there’s just not a lot of conversation or research around it,” she told WWD, adding that she’s committed to raising awareness for women’s health issues like PMDD. The condition affects 1.6 percent of women and girls globally, according to research by the University of Oxford.“Conversation, for me personally, makes me feel less alone,” she continued. “When we can identify with each other and have conversations relating to each other and talking about the things we’re dealing with and struggling with, I do think it makes it feel like less of a lonely journey.”James Devaney//Getty ImagesHailey also shared she “feels really drawn to women’s health” because she and her loved ones have had different diagnoses that affected their lifestyles.“I have a sister who struggles with PCOS. I have lots of friends that struggle with it, with endometriosis, with a lot of different, very specific women’s health issues,” she explained. “As a woman, I feel frustrated by the lack of research, the lack of awareness, the lack of certain conversation around it.”The beauty mogul’s generous pledge will reportedly “support medical research, education, and care in historically underfunded areas, including pregnancy and postpartum health and autoimmune conditions.”According to WWD, proposals have already been submitted by research institutions, and grant recipients will be announced sometime next year.
