The Delhi Directorate of Education has issued an advisory to government, government-aided, and private unaided recognised schools, urging them to strengthen awareness, prevention, and preparedness against seasonal influenza and swine flu (H1N1).NO NEED FOR UNDUE ALARMThe advisory said symptoms associated with seasonal influenza/H1N1 may include sore throat, cough, difficulty in breathing, body ache, headache, fatigue, chills, and fever. The department said there is no need for undue alarm but stressed the importance of timely awareness and responsible preventive practices, particularly in schools.Under its “Healthy School - Healthy Community” approach, the Education Department has asked schools to reinforce basic health and respiratory hygiene practices.Students and staff have been advised to cover their nose and mouth while coughing or sneezing and dispose of used tissues appropriately. Schools have also been asked to encourage regular handwashing with soap and water, especially before eating and after coughing or sneezing. MAINTAIN DISTANCE, USE MASKS IF NEEDEDThe advisory also asks schools to maintain an appropriate distance from people showing respiratory symptoms. Masks may be used where considered necessary, it said.Schools have further been instructed to regularly clean classrooms, common areas, and frequently touched surfaces. Adequate ventilation should also be ensured wherever feasible. The department has additionally called for awareness against spitting on school premises and in public places.HEALTHY HABITS AND PERSONAL HYGIENE Students and staff have been encouraged to maintain adequate hydration, eat nutritious food, get sufficient rest, and follow general personal hygiene practices.The advisory also asks students and staff to avoid frequently touching their eyes, nose, and mouth, which can increase the risk of infection.NO SELF-MEDICATIONThe Education Department has specifically advised against self-medication.
