Gut health and mental well-being are closely linked, doctors explain the connection

Gut health and mental well-being are closely connected, with communication between the gut and brain influencing mood, stress, digestion and immunity. Speaking at the India Today HealthWealth Summit 2026, gastroenterologist Dr Ashwini Chopra and transformational life coach Rasik Chopra discussed the gut-brain connection and how everyday habits affect overall health. Dr Ashwini Chopra explained that the gut and brain communicate through a two-way network involving the vagus nerve and the enteric nervous system. He highlighted the role of gut bacteria in digestion, nutrient production and emotional health. The discussion also explored how prolonged stress can affect gut bacteria by triggering the release of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. An imbalance in gut bacteria, known as dysbiosis, may influence digestive and emotional responses. The experts discussed emotional eating, explaining how stress can increase cravings for sugary and high-calorie foods. Rasik Chopra recommended the 80:20 approach, allowing people to maintain healthy habits while enjoying occasional indulgences. On popular gut-health trends, Dr Chopra advised against relying on random supplements, detox teas and gut-healing gummies. He recommended homemade curd, fermented foods, fibre-rich diets, exercise and adequate sleep. The speakers concluded that better gut health requires balanced nutrition, emotional awareness, regular physical activity and consistent lifestyle changes.
