Gurugram better than Delhi? Man explains why he prefers it despite civic woes

Days after heavy rain brought Gurugram to a standstill, an entrepreneur has said he would still prefer living in the city over Delhi, citing its career opportunities, greenery, malls, restaurants and connectivity despite its civic issues.Saurabh Jain, who recently moved to Gurugram after living in Delhi all his life, said it had been less than a year since he made the shift.In a post on X, Saurabh acknowledged Gurugram’s poor civic infrastructure but said the city offered several advantages over Delhi.“As much as Gurugram is mocked due to civic issues, I do not want to shift back to Delhi from Gurugram,” he said, adding: “The career opportunities, greenery (DLF areas), malls, restaurants and road connectivity to Rajasthan and Haryana you get here are better than Delhi.” Moreover, Saurabh also pointed to gated colonies and services such as Blinkit ambulance and Urban Company domestic help, which he said are generally not available in most parts of Delhi.His post came after heavy rainfall on August 24 left large parts of Gurugram waterlogged and severely disrupted traffic. The city recorded 75 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm, with school buses stranded for hours. The district administration had also advised offices to allow employees to work from home and schools to shift online on August 25. On August 26, a section of road near IFFCO Chowk caved in after water washed away soil beneath it.Despite the recurring monsoon-related problems, Saurabh said Gurugram had improved considerably over the past four decades. Recalling his visits to the city in the mid-1980s, he said roads, civic infrastructure, economic activity, electricity and water supply had all improved.“Gurugram will improve one day for sure. It has improved considerably over the last four decades. My Dadiji’s family is from here. Roads, civic infrastructure, economic activity, even electricity and water supply have all improved a lot since my earliest memories of visiting Gurgaon in mid 1980s,” he said.In his post, Saurabh also said four changes could make Gurugram better than most Indian cities: privatisation of electricity, major improvements to drainage, doubling water processing capacity and better cleaning by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG).His post drew mixed reactions on X, with some users disagreeing with his comparison between Gurugram and Delhi.One user said Gurugram was “only made on hype of brokers and builders” and argued that Delhi was “far superior” in every aspect.Another suggested that Saurabh Jain visit places such as Nehru Park, Lodhi Garden, the Garden of Five Senses, Khan Market, GK-2 M Block and Rajouri Garden before comparing the two cities, pointing to Delhi’s variety of parks, markets, cafs and overall city life.Gurugram, one of Haryana’s biggest revenue generators, continues to face severe waterlogging during the monsoon despite 408 rainwater harvesting systems being installed in areas under the municipal corporation.- EndsPublished On: Aug 28, 2026 08:21 IST
