I remember when it was in Early Access and starting to get some buzz after a series of major updates, but the world wasn't ready for its full launch in late 2023, when it immediately took off and became part of the "one of the best games of all time" discussions. But Baldur's Gate 3 isn't the only game in town. While many RPGs have been released in its wake, not many have matched its enduring quality. Another Steam release is coming soon that aims to capture the magic of ARPGs while offering a brand-new offbeat sci-fi setting. Guardians Meets Baldur's Gate 3 In New Steam RPG In development by Epictellers Entertainment, Starfinder: Afterlight aims to mix the RPG feel of Baldur's Gate 3 with the ragtag spirit of the Guardians of the Galaxy series. This is exactly what you can expect from Starfinder: "Starfinder: Afterlight is a party-based RPG that brings Paizo's beloved science-fantasy universe to life. Battle across the Pact Worlds, lead a legendary crew where your choices shape their destiny, and well, save the galaxy while you're at it." As a single-player RPG, you'll engage in turn-based combat with several classes (Soldier, Envoy, Operative, Mystic, Solarian, and Witchwarper), with a three-action system on offer, and full RPG systems like leveling and skill customization. There's a branching narrative where there are "no wrong answers," and "nothing is forbidden" in the confines of the game's universe. The studio is promising a 40-60 hour adventure, along with mature themes. Starfinder Is Getting A Free Demo Soon The developer has been pretty open about the game's development, sharing many blogs on the project's Steam page, including character concept art and the motivations behind the cast. There's everything from big Shark heavies to bug priests, so if you're in the mood for a unique universe to explore, Starfinder could deliver on that front. Right now, Starfinder: Afterlight is looking to enter Early Access on Steam this year. It's currently in an Alpha state (as its screenshots note), but the goal is to launch Early Access before the end of 2026. If you're looking to try the game out before that Early Access period, there's also a demo coming on September 10. It'll offer a full look at the game's opening, as well as the prologue to Act 1. The studio estimates it'll offer around one to two hours of gameplay, focusing on the characters Kole, Preach, and Sterling. A Vesk Envoy, Human Soldier, and Shirren Operative are available to choose from as your hero, so you can theoretically replay the demo on Steam at least three times for some variance.
