People Are Really Worried About Falling In Love With GTA 6's Lucia Source: Rockstar Published Nov 7, 2026, 5:01 AM EST Sam Woods is TheGamer’s Senior Reporter. He’s been in games journalism since 2020 and has undertaken a variety of roles in that time. These have included roles such as SEO Editor, Managing Editor at DualShockers, and Global Head of Gaming, and he's also been seen on the BBC. He was promoted to the Senior Reporter position in 2025 following a series of high-quality reports and exclusives for TheGamer. Since 2020, Sam has written over 3,000 articles and specializes in telling the stories of the people behind the games. He’s interviewed the biggest game directors, some of the industry’s top talents, told the stories of how indie games came to be, and spoken to players about what really makes them tick. He’s also interviewed some of the world’s biggest musical artists to find out how the medium has inspired their work, and TV and Film actors about their roles in video game adaptations. He even hosted a PAX panel in 2021 and made a documentary in 2024 surrounding the creation of a Disney game. Alongside this, Sam focuses on breaking news. He got the scoop on Perfect Dark’s cancellation, provided context on some AI drama, and revealed that Lady Dimitrescu’s actress would love to step back into the character’s giant shoes. These articles have been picked up by the biggest gaming sites, including IGN, GameSpot, and PC Gamer. He also loves to dive into the numbers behind the games. Sam’s journey in games journalism has taken him all over the world. He’s covered Gamescom in Germany, Summer Game Fest in Los Angeles, and Tokyo Game Show in Japan, each on three occasions. He’s been learning Japanese since 2024 with the intention of identifying and translating Japanese-language news and bringing it to English-language audiences first, something he’s done countless times. Sam’s first review was 2020’s Battletoads reboot, and he’s since reviewed games in The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Pokemon franchises. Sign in to your TheGamer account Last month, the BBC was mocked for an article it ran about people falling in love with video game characters. It posed the question, "Is being in an in-game relationship cheating on your real relationship?" The overwhelming response was 'no, it's not cheating', with only four percent of men and seven percent of women saying it was. It seemed like people deemed the question dumb, and they were quick to lambast the writer and his article. However, it may not have been as dumb as they thought, as Google searches for "fall in love in a game" and "fall in love Lucia" have risen drastically in the build-up to Grand Theft Auto 6. People Really Are Googling "Fall In Love Lucia" As We Approach GTA 6's Launch Source: Rockstar Grand Theft Auto 6's marketing is now in full swing. Trailers and screenshots are dropping on a semi-regular basis; Rockstar is taking over Miami, and online discussion and hype are reaching a fever pitch. We're seeing more of the game's protagonists, Jason and Lucia, from both official sources and the massive leaks, which showed a clip of Lucia in the nude. Interestingly, Rockstar's marketing cycle has been closely tied to a rise in searches for "fall in love in a game." Using data from Google Trends, searches for the query remained stagnant from November 2021 to roughly May 2025, which just so happens to be when Rockstar released the second GTA 6 trailer. From May 2025 onwards, searches for that query skyrocketed, almost tripling between then and now. Correlation doesn't equal causation, though, so we decided to overlay a couple of other queries to see if everything lined up, and it does. As searches for "fall in love in a game" rose, as did people Googling "fall in love Lucia" and "is in game relationship cheating". It really seems like people are preparing themselves to catch feelings for the GTA 6 leading lady. This rise in searches also lines up with a flurry of social media posts from people who have yet to play the game, declaring their love for the character. Grand Theft Auto 6 is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime event, and I don't think people have been this scared of virtually cheating on their partners... ever.
