GTA 6 Online Release Date Update Suggests We're In For A Long Wait

After a few stops and starts, the massive franchise is ready to drop another game, and whether you're hyped or sick of hearing about it, it's set to debut on November 19, 2026. While the jury was still out on its release earlier this year, everything seems good to go, especially after the recent Netflix gameplay showcase. But what about GTA 6 Online? Well, that's another story entirely. Thanks to a new update, we might be waiting much longer for that aspect of GTA 6 to hit [via Forbes]. When Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives in November, it'll be the single-player component only. We now know, thanks to information from Rockstar, that other than the premium editions of the game, there won't be any additional purchases at launch. Since this is ostensibly a single-player game without the online persistent world available immediately, that makes perfect sense. But when is the new iteration of GTA Online coming? According to a report from Forbes, which notes how many people have been needling Rockstar about a release date, the studio isn't keen to talk about what's next for GTA Online. As many pundits have pointed out (and it's clear as day for anyone who follows GTA Online), Rockstar doesn't really have a need to reinvent the wheel at this time. While this isn't an official statement directly from Rockstar, it makes perfect sense. It looks like Rockstar is not following the plan for GTA 5 (which had a relatively short turnaround for GTA Online, albeit sans heists at first), which fits, given how popular GTA Online became. GTA Online is still widely successful in a sea of failing live-service ventures, and fans still buy tons of Shark Cards (microtransactions) monthly in the current version. It doesn't make much sense to start over, and potentially make even less money in the short term. Plus, GTA 6 is only launching on two platforms initially (PS5 and Xbox Series X). Rockstar would want to wait for the eventual PC port, at the very least. Rockstar and Take-Two are a pretty savvy operation. It wouldn't surprise me if they were developing the next era of GTA Online but waiting for the right time to test it further, work out all the bugs, and then unleash it on the world. As it stands, GTA 6 Online could be years away.
