GTA 6 is getting an extended preview and trailer on Netflix this month

There was hope that Rockstar would have something new to share for GTA 6 this month, considering the game was promised a summer marketing campaign, and yet all the studio has done so far is reveal the cover art and pre-order details. Well, good news, a new trailer is finally coming this month, and Rockstar has not only announced it in advance (instead of dropping it on a random afternoon) but it’s promised it will be the meatiest look at GTA 6 so far. That’s because it’s being billed as an Extended Look, which means there should be some real gameplay this time, and it’s even airing on Netflix first, before being uploaded to YouTube. The preview will air near the end of the month on Netflix, on August 27 at 8pm BST. The YouTube upload will follow at 2am on August 28 so if you’re not a Netflix subscriber, you’ll need to wait six hours to watch it yourself. Ahead of GTA 5’s launch, Rockstar released a longer, more in-depth gameplay trailer complete with narration from Rockstar – which the current GTA 6’s trailers have not had yet. So, you should expect something along those lines after the first two GTA 6 trailers were more cinematic in their presentation. For GTA 6’s big preview to be aired on Netflix, though, it suggests that Rockstar and publisher Take-Two want to make more of a show out of it. While Rockstar nor Netflix have said how long the preview will be, most of that likely won’t be spent on gameplay footage but talking head celebrities discussing how cool the game is going to be. It could serve as the reveal for who the actors playing protagonists Jason and Lucia are, although some fans are convinced they figured out who they are ages ago. Other more famous celebrities are also likely to be involved, both in the game and the Netflix special – previous GTA games have featured everyone from Burt Reynolds to Cara Delevingne. Beyond showing off more of the actual gameplay, Rockstar might officially acknowledge GTA 6’s expected online multiplayer mode and maybe the inevitable PC port. Neither of those things are guaranteed though and it wouldn’t be that surprising if they weren’t mentioned. GTA Online didn’t go live until a few weeks after the launch of GTA 5 (and got its own trailer) and while that was a long time ago Rockstar does like to keep to past patterns when it comes to things like that. There may also be some re-treading of info fans already know about, purely for the sake of catching everyone up to speed. After all, some people who aren’t attuned to gaming news might be discovering GTA 6 for the first time, through this Netflix preview. ‘Grand Theft Auto reveals have become cultural moments in their own right,’ reads a statement by Brandon Riegg, Netflix vice president of nonfiction series and sports. ‘The anticipation and fandom around Grand Theft Auto 6 is unprecedented, and we’re honoured that Rockstar Games has partnered with us to debut the next part of the Grand Theft Auto story with Netflix members first.’ ‘It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.’ Clearly this is a bid to drum up Netflix subscriptions too but, again, you can just wait until the following morning for it to be shared to YouTube. And even if you do sign up for Netflix because of this, you can just cancel straight after.
