GTA 5 is finally on Nintendo Switch but Rockstar has already blocked it

While there are no plans to bring GTA 6 to Nintendo Switch 2 – not least because the console would almost certainly not be able to run such a complex game – it remains a little surprising that Rockstar never ported GTA 5 to either Switch console. The hardware is certainly capable of running Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 era games like GTA 5 and Rockstar itself has proved that by its Switch 1 port of the original Red Dead Redemption. But in case you needed further evidence, a group of modders have managed to get GTA 5 running on the Switch 1. Unsurprisingly, though, it’s already caught the unwanted attention of Rockstar. The mod comes from a team known as Paralympics Productions and was made available in late August, though it garnered more notoriety earlier this month for the fact that the modders got the game working natively on the Switch 1’s hardware. What’s more, the mod was apparently based on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One version, although it’s been suggested that this was achieved via leaked source code from 2023. Even if that wasn’t the case, Rockstar has strict rules about mods for its games. And one of those rules, as detailed on its website, says not to ‘modify our games to operate on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where they have not been officially released.’ So, it comes as no surprise to learn the mod has now been taken down. Even if Rockstar didn’t get involved, the fact that the mod requires a modified Switch console means Nintendo probably would’ve sent its own lawyers anyway. There is still video footage on YouTube that shows GTA 5 running on the Switch 1 but don’t be shocked if it’s also been deleted by the time you’re reading this. Based on comments by Mojso, who describes themselves as the CEO of Paralympics Productions, Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive threatened legal action unless the mod was removed. ‘Paralympics Productions is shutting down on October 3. Thank you everyone who supported us through tough times and lengthy development. I am sorry for not fulfilling your expectations and leaving you high and dry. I am thankful for Take-Two’s mercy so this is the definitive end,’ says Mojso on X. They also made it clear in the replies that they have no intention of releasing the source code for the mod or letting anyone else take over the project, since doing so would still invite a lawsuit. ‘I wouldn’t win in court most likely. They have solid grounds and with me being cocky it shows real intent for ‘mayhem’ so I can’t even appeal to a jury or something like I didn’t know what I was getting into,’ they add. This isn’t the first time someone outside of Rockstar has tried getting GTA 5 to work on Switch. A Russian hacker attempted it in 2024, although they only got as far as the prologue and quickly received a DMCA takedown for their trouble. Will Rockstar ever just do an official Switch port?
