CARLOS ALCARAZ’S hopes of winning the US Open have been left up in the air after pulling out of the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard is yet to recover from his wrist injury that he picked up at the Barcelona Open in April. On Tuesday, tournament director Bob Moran said: “We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible. “We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.” It is not a secret that Sinner will be Alcaraz’s biggest competitor in his chase for the title. But the odds may turn against him, despite beating the Italian in the final in 2025. Sinner sits top of the world rankings with his Spaniard adversary in second. The main draw for the US Open is in the calendar for August 30. Alcaraz was tipped for a Cincinnati return on August 11 after footage surfaced online of him playing near full strength. But after Barcelona, Alcaraz revealed he would be sitting out of competitive play for the rest of the clay-court season. At the time, the seven-time Grand Slam champion posted on X, saying: “After the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros. “We wait to evaluate the progress so we can decide when to return to the court. “This is a difficult time for me, but I am sure we will come out of it stronger.” Comment now
