Greta Lee, Rebecca Ferguson, and Carrie Coon Rom-Com ‘Honeymoon/Funeral’ Lands at Black Bear

“Honeymoon/Funeral,” a romantic comedy starring a curiously fun trio of Greta Lee, Rebecca Ferguson, and Carrie Coon, has been acquired by Black Bear for North American distribution. The film hails from financier and producer MRC and last month wrapped production in London. Nahnatchka Khan, the comedian, filmmaker of “Always Be My Maybe,” and Emmy nominee, is directing the film from a script by “Yellowjackets” writer Julia Bicknell. “Honeymoon/Funeral” follows two women (Ferguson and Lee) who meet on a flight from LA to London — one en route to her honeymoon by herself after being left at the altar by her girlfriend, the other headed home for her mother’s funeral — and wind up spending the week together. In what turned out to be a pretty quiet TIFF for sales, “Honeymoon/Funeral” was one of the sales titles being shopped on the new TIFF Market, and even then it took several weeks for this deal to close. FilmNation Entertainment is repping worldwide sales on the film, and it is currently in post-production. Khan and Jennifer Carreras are producing for Fierce Baby, with Bicknell also producing. MRC financed and oversaw production. “’Honeymoon/Funeral’ is an original and hilarious story that is deeply human, anchored by the performances of Rebecca, Greta, and Carrie, three of the best actresses working today,” said Katie Anderson, Black Bear’s EVP of Acquisitions. “We can’t wait to partner with our friends at MRC and FilmNation to share this world that Nahnatchka and Julia have created with audiences.” Black Bear has “Wicker” coming out later this month, the festival darling starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård that is also getting a kinky special release in 4DX, and also another film starring Greta Lee alongside Cooper Hoffman called “Jonah,” as well as new films from David Leitch, Guy Ritchie, Julia Cox, and Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. On the MRC side, the studio made “Wuthering Heights” and “The Love Hypothesis” earlier this year and is still awaiting the release of “The Gallerist,” which premiered at Sundance.
