Greggs fans say it’s ‘criminal’ this treat is only sold in London

Greggs fans are calling on the bakery to launch the regional classic across the UK (Picture: Alex Segre/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) Greggs has been fuelling the nation with sausage rolls and pastries for decades, but not all menu items make it to every bakery across the UK. The Greggs ‘secret menu’ includes bakes you can only get in certain parts of the country — like the Scotland-only Scotch Pie, or the Peach Melba, found in the North East. And now, a storm is brewing online, as fans outside of the capital have discovered the Tottenham Cake, which you can only buy in London and the south. The pink-iced slice features a traditional British sheet-pan sponge cake topped with bright pink icing and desiccated coconut or sprinkles. The delicacy takes its name from its origin on Tottenham High Road, where Quaker baker Henry Chalkley first baked it in 1884, at the Friends Meeting House. Its iconic pink icing was originally dyed using fresh juice from mulberries harvested straight from the meeting house garden. The cake is over 100 years old (Picture: Getty Images/iStockphoto) But the cute pastry has sparked debate after the food reviewer @UKNewestFoods, who hails from Newcastle, posted a picture of the treat on Instagram, revealing how she’d ‘never seen’ it before. Those who know the cake well, were quick to give the food Instagrammer an education. ‘This takes me back to my childhood in North London. Tottenham cake, so good!’ wrote commenter @teamdonovan. While @jademclaire said she ‘grew up on these’. The response was so passionate that shoppers are now begging Greggs to launch the product nationwide. ‘The fact that I haven’t been able to have Tottenham cake since I left London is genuinely devastating,’ wrote @hodge_nic. One TikToker even called it ‘criminal’ that they were hard to come by. ‘They should definitely bring this to the rest of the UK,’ said @sameera. ‘Praying they get launched nationwide one day, I grew up on these,’ added @jademclaire So Metro approached the bakery to ask if they’re going to give in to customer demand. But we’re sorry to say, it’s a big fat no. A Greggs spokesperson revealed that there are no plans for the regional items to be launched nationwide, telling Metro: ‘Tottenham Cake is one of a small selection of regional products that are unique to shops in a specific area, alongside the likes of Lorne Sausage breakfast rolls in Scotland, and Stotties in Newcastle. ‘They’re regional treasures for a reason, and home is where they’re staying.’ While that might sound mean, Greggs did confirm to Metro that Tottenham Cake is available in 600 stores in London and the south. It’s not ideal news, but we’re holding out hope that Greggs might follow in the footsteps of McDonald’s and do a bit of a menu swap. The fast-food chain is currently selling the second round of their World Heist Menu, after initially launching in October 2025. The McDonald’s World Menu Heist is a limited-time promotional campaign where McDonald’s UK ‘steals’ fan-favourite menu items from international shops and brings them to UK restaurants for a limited time. Instead of having to travel abroad to sample regional specialities, UK customers get a temporary pass to try cult classics like Germany’s Big Rösti, Canada’s Maple & Cheddar Chicken burger and S’mores McFlurry, China’s Szechuan Sauce, the UAE’s Mac & Cheese Triangles, and the Netherlands’ Paprika McShaker Fries. A Tottenham cake... or a pink slice? The @UKNewestFoods reviewer was accused of ‘blasphemy’ for calling the Greggs offering a ‘pink slice’ rather than a Tottenham cake. ‘How is it not a pink slice?’ she asked in the comments. ‘It’s sponge cake with pink icing on top.’ In fairness, she makes a good point, but the delicacy has long been a Tottenham Cake, and is sold in Greggs as such. The Greggs spokesperson confirmed: ‘It’s always called a Tottenham Cake; it’s not referred to as “Pink Slice” anywhere.’ Do you have a story you’d like to share?
