Green Party backlash as members push to end support for Ukraine as leading activist behind amendment says President Zelenskyy is a 'sacrificial partner' in 'NATO's war'

See more Daily Mail on Google - save us as a Preferred Source Published: 06:11 EDT, 11 September 2026 | Updated: 06:35 EDT, 11 September 2026 The Green Party is under fire after activists launched a push to reject sending aid and military support to Ukraine.More than a dozen prominent members and activists are attempting to strip a motion on 'strengthening solidarity with Ukraine' of its call to increase aid to the war-torn country.Instead, the amendment wants to replace this with 'a call for Russia, Ukraine, the US, the United Kingdom and European partners to prioritise a timely, just and sustainable resolution to the Ukraine-Russia conflict... and a marked departure from militarised responses.'The amendment has been tabled by prominent Green activist Ashley Tubb, who according to The Times recently claimed that the protests in Iran 'were instigated and armed by the Americans and the Zionists'.Conference papers seen by the Mail show Mr Tubb describing the conflict as 'NATO's war', claiming that the West wants to 'balkanise Russia', and branding Ukraine a 'sacrificial partner'.Explaining his position, Tubb wrote: 'I do not believe that fighting NATO's war can deliver [peace and security].'I say this because I believe Ukraine is being exploited by two large powers (NATO and Russia) to work as a kind of sacrificial partner so the collective West can further their goal in balkanising Russia.'I think that is disgusting and the peoples of Ukraine deserve peace and security.' More than a dozen prominent Green Party members are pushing an amendment that would ditch the party's support for sending military aid to Ukraine The motion is set to be debated at the party's upcoming annual conference in Brighton The members' views were condemned by both Tory and Labour figures, as one Labour MP branded it 'morally bankrupt'He also took a swipe at President Zelenskyy, claiming he had bowed to 'massive pressure from NATO members' in U-turning to back war with Russia.The amendment has the backing of 14 Green members, including Paul Ingram who serves on the Green Party's national council, a body with responsibility for the party's policy, direction and strategy.Among the others supporting it are five former Green Party candidates.The efforts by Green members to oppose sending aid and arms to Ukraine were met with condemnation across the political spectrum.Dame Priti Patel, the Conservatives' International Secretary, blasted: 'The Green Party would be a danger to our national security.''While Ukrainians are dying to defend their country, Green activists are peddling conspiracy theories about NATO and tabling amendments to strip out support for military aid to Kyiv. That is doing Vladimir Putin's work for him, and the Green Party leadership should withdraw this amendment today.'The freedom these activists enjoy to sit in a conference hall and debate whether Ukraine deserves weapons exists because of NATO and because of the men and women of our Armed Forces. Conservatives will always back both through strong defence at home, and Ukraine for as long as it takes.'Labour MP Luke Akehurst branded the moves 'a shameful insult to the Ukrainian people, who have shown extraordinary courage and resilience in the face of Putin's brutal invasion. They are not anyone's 'sacrificial partner'.''To belittle that sacrifice, blame NATO and then try to weaken the military support keeping Ukrainians alive is morally bankrupt.'Fellow Labour MP Phil Brickell added: 'I have been to Ukraine and seen first-hand the extraordinary bravery of people defending their homes, their families and their freedom from Putin's illegal invasion. To describe them as a 'sacrificial partner' fighting 'NATO's war' is grotesque.''These are Kremlin talking points, not serious foreign policy. The Greens need to explain why a senior activist is trying to strip out support for the military aid Ukrainians need to defend themselves, while blaming the West and questioning Ukraine's democracy.'A Green Party spokesman said: 'The Green Party is democratic and our policy is set by members. Comments on the conference forum, which exists as a space for robust discussion and sometimes disagreement, do not represent the official views of the Green Party. Debate and disagreement are healthy elements of any democratic space. The forum has a code of conduct which members are expected to abide by.'Mr Tubb was approached for comment.
