Graham Arnold sets sights on Asian Cup following Iraq’s Khaleeji 27 exit

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi national football team head coach Graham Arnold addressed media representatives on Saturday, October 3, 2026, affirming that the squad’s primary strategic objective is to deliver a commanding performance at the upcoming AFC Asian Cup. Reflecting on the Lions of Mesopotamia’s campaign at the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup (“Khaleeji 27”) in Jeddah, Arnold stated that despite falling short of the knockout stages, the tournament yielded crucial tactical gains, most notably expanding squad depth and integrating a new generation of domestic talent. Speaking to journalists, Arnold voiced strong optimism regarding Iraqi football’s long-term trajectory. He highlighted that working alongside a refreshed technical staff while blooding younger prospects produced impressive individual showings. Arnold revealed that the technical team has identified four to five newly tested players who demonstrated starting-caliber potential, adding essential tactical variety—particularly across the frontline—ahead of the continental championship. Addressing the public scrutiny surrounding Iraq’s early elimination, Arnold defended his squad’s on-pitch record, which concluded with one victory, one draw, and a narrow defeat to tournament hosts Saudi Arabia. The Australian tactician voiced deep frustration with the tournament’s regulations, arguing that relying on a drawing of lots rather than official FIFA world rankings to break group-stage ties was deeply disappointing. Nevertheless, Arnold affirmed he returned to Baghdad with his head held high, satisfied that the pre-tournament objective of evaluating emerging talent succeeded. Looking ahead, Arnold outlined the national team’s roadmap toward the AFC Asian Cup, confirming that Iraq will contest two international friendlies during the November 2026 FIFA international window. The upcoming training camp will serve as an operational proving ground to merge the newly discovered prospects with established key starters returning from injury, cementing an expanded, competitive roster for continental competition.
