Many gamers, myself included, might reminisce about the golden age of PC building when you could buy a GTX 970 for $249 or a GTX 1060 for $299. This contrasts sharply with today's reality. Modern hardware has become pretty absurd, and asking someone to identify what a mid-range GPU is can yield completely different answers. The first option is to look for a mid-range card in terms of price. Something that costs around $300 might be mid-range in price but is actually entry-level in class. Something mid-range in resolution might clock in at about $700, which isn't mid-range for the wallet. Another answer might be anything that costs less than $1,000, considering flagship cards are now hitting $2,000. Realistically, the term mid-range has lost all technical and financial meaning. Between aggressive tier inflation, artificial VRAM segmentation, software upscaling dependencies, and bloated MSRPs, GPU pricing no longer reflects hardware silicon size. It reflects how much vendors can extract for basic 1440p gaming. Prices are going up And equivalent silicon isn't increasing Over the past 10 years, we've seen silicon shrink, and prices expand. GPU dies have shrunk relative to their price tags. In previous generations, a $500 card got you a big-die GPU, for example, 104/106 silicon. Today, the same price tag buys you narrow-bus-width, small-die chips historically reserved for $200 budget cards. VRAM is also being used as an artificial paywall. 8GB of VRAM was pushed on midrange cards for years, even though modern game engines routinely exceed 10GB to 12GB at ultra settings. To get safe VRAM buffers, 1440p users are forced to jump up $150 to sometimes even $200 in price tier to access those top-of-the-line cards, which shouldn't be necessary. Alongside this, you're seeing price bumps for software-driven performance rather than silicon itself, with features like DLSS and FSR used to push up price tags. Manufacturers use AI upscaling and frame generation to justify these exceptionally high prices. A card rendering natively at 1080p is marketed as a 1440p mid-range powerhouse because software interpolation bridges the gap. Even though the silicon itself can't achieve this performance, it still comes with an attached price tag as if it can. MSRP no longer exists Flagships can easily set you back $2000 Another issue in the GPU market is the apparent death of MSRP. Now you're seeing flagship GPUs come in at anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000, and these flagships artificially shift consumer perception. When the top-tier card costs as much as an entire high-end PC used to, spending $600 on a middle-of-the-road card suddenly feels like a more reasonable mid-range compromise. However, that wasn't the case when high-end GPUs cost this much years ago. As a result, major silicon makers have largely abandoned a true budget-friendly or mid-range GPU in the $200 sweet spot, leaving budget builders to older legacy inventory or entry-level offerings. With previous generations, like the GTX 10 series, for example, a classic mid-range price bracket was between $200 and $300, like for the GTX 1060. Move along to the RTX 20 series, and you were looking at between $350 and $400 for a mid-range GPU like the RTX 2060. Jump ahead another generation to the RTX 30 series, and suddenly you're looking at between $400-$500 for an RTX 3060 Ti. Each generation has brought a slow creep in price, and now mid-range cards like the RTX 4070 or 5070 cost anywhere from $500 to $750. So what are modern GPU tiers? Entry-level has become legacy hardware Realistically, GPU tiers are currently all over the place, and what you judge as a mid-range might vary based on what factor you are using to judge this. Is it down to price or performance? When you look at a breakdown of the GPU options available to builders today, using a non-marketing framework can help you understand what graphics cards are truly worth. If you're looking for a super budget-friendly option that is between $200 and $350, you'll be looking at entry-level or older technology. This should allow you to achieve 1080p rasterization with 8GB to 12GB of VRAM. A true modern mid-range graphics card will probably set you back around $350 to $600 and should let you run 1440p workhorses with at least 12GB to 16GB of VRAM, plus solid upscaling support. Upper-mid-range or enthusiast cards for those who want to achieve 4K will likely come in at $600 to $850. These give you access to entry-level 4K, meaning that you might not be able to get the highest refresh rates when you are gaming in 4K. However, you get a higher refresh rate at 1440p and the ability to use heavy ray tracing/path tracing. Right now, a high-end or halo card can easily cost over $1,000, and it gives you uncompromised 4K performance for enthusiasts and creators alike. Model numbers aren't enough anymore Price-to-performance is way more important Unfortunately, model numbers like 60 or 70 rarely tell you where a card sits in the stack anymore. Model names are marketing tools and, realistically, you should be judging the tier of a card based on its price-to-performance, VRAM capacity, and raw memory bandwidth, as these are the only true metrics left. Price alone no longer indicates a card's tier, since it's changed so dramatically over the past five years.
