Govt extends ED director Rahul Navin's tenure by 1 year

(HT File)According to an order issued by the Union Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension for Navin, who is a 1993-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer.The extension will continue beyond his scheduled retirement on July 31, 2027, according to the government order.All about Rahul NavinNavin hails from Bihar and has an outstanding academic background, holding B.Tech and M.Tech degrees from IIT Kanpur and an MBA from Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne.According to the Enforcement Directorate website, Navin has over 30 years of experience in the Income Tax Department and is regarded as an expert in international taxation.His previous stints before becoming ED directorFrom 2004 to 2008, he was posted with the International Taxation Directorate in Mumbai, where he played a key role in raising tax demands on several offshore transactions involving underlying assets in India. He later served as Commissioner of Transfer Pricing from November 2015 to November 2017, supervising transfer pricing audits involving intangibles, cost contribution arrangements, royalty payments, inbound and outbound loans, commodity transactions and other matters.Navin had two stints with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) — first as Under Secretary in the Tax Policy Division from July 2000 to April 2004, and later as Director in the Foreign Tax and Tax Research Division from April 2011 to November 2015.In November 2019, considering his expertise in international taxation, Navin was posted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Enforcement Directorate, primarily to assist in India's mutual evaluation by the FATF. He was appointed Special Director (HQ) in the ED in November 2020, where he played a key role in coordinating money laundering investigations across the country, overseeing international cooperation and treaty-based asset recovery, as well as administrative, establishment and vigilance functions.Navin assumed charge as Director (In-Charge) of the Enforcement Directorate on September 15, 2023, and was appointed Director of Enforcement on August 14, 2024.
