Govt boosts onion supply to key cities as prices rise

The move is aimed at ensuring adequate supplies in key markets.FIVE CITIES IN FIRST PHASEThe first phase will cover five major consumption centres — Chennai, Madurai, Delhi, Kochi and Guwahati. More destinations will be added later depending on market requirements.The government said onion availability in the country remains sufficient to meet domestic demand in the coming months. Onion production in 2025-26 is estimated at around 307.37 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), almost unchanged from 307.67 LMT in the previous year.SEASONAL RISE IN ONION PRICESThe government said onion prices usually see a seasonal rise during August and September. To limit unnecessary price fluctuations, the government is also releasing onions in controlled quantities from its buffer stock.‘KANDA EXPRESS’ MOVED 88,000 MTThe government said the ‘Kanda Express’ helped transport around 88,000 metric tonnes of onions to 16 major cities during 2025-26.
