Google's Pixel 11 phones have new cameras that do the photo work for you—at a higher price

The emphasis this year isn't just on AI features like Gemini Intelligence — it's on cameras that can do everything short of pressing the shutter button. The Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL, and 11 Pro Fold all introduce a “Magic Capture” mode that automatically crops photos, records video, and removes blur when you tap the shutter. If you're at a lively party, you might not have to worry about a poorly-framed or poorly-timed shot — the AI ideally gets it right the first time. “Camera Looks,” meanwhile, parallels Apple and Samsung features that let you adjust photo styles to match your tastes, so you can get a new tone or muted colors if the stock output doesn't suit your tastes. The base Pixel 11 and foldable Pixel 11 Pro Fold both have upgraded 48-megapixel main cameras as well as a familiar 10.8MP telephoto sensor with 5X optical and 30X software zoom, while the Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL have new 50MP main cams with larger 1/1.3-inch sensors as well as a "redesigned" 48MP, 5X telephoto sensor that now delivers up to 120X Pro Zoom. You should see practical improvements no matter which phone you use. The Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold have 56 percent higher light sensitivity to help with night shots. The Pro and Pro XL promise extra detail up to 3X zoom, while the new telephoto sensor brings in 32 percent more light. They're also better for movies with 8K recording and a Pro Stable Video mode for action shots. While you'll still need Video Boost cloud processing, you won't envy your Galaxy- and iPhone-toting friends quite as much. Pixel 11 & Fold features: Tensor G6 and HiLight Faster, but with tradeoffs As with most (but not all) Pixel phone releases, a new processor is at the heart of the upgrade. The Tensor G6 provides the expected general improvements to speed (such as 25 percent faster browsing) and efficiency (20 percent), but its 50 percent "more powerful" Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) helps with AI and camera processing. Gemini Intelligence's AI agents get a lift while booking rides or even calling businesses, but standard Gemini Nano models should be more accurate and responsive. Titan M3 provides "quantum-safe" security. Notably, there are steps forward and back. While all Pixel phones now start with 256GB of storage versus the modest 128GB of before, only 11 Pro and Pro XL configurations with at least 512GB of space have 16GB of RAM, where that was previously the default. You can likely blame that on cost-cutting related to the ongoing memory crisis, but it's a rare step backward. There are minor design updates that include brighter (up to 3,600 nits) and more scratch-resistant screens, as well as an Extreme Charging Mode that accelerates battery top-ups. The conspicuous change is the previously-teased HiLight notification LED on the Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Ambient lights around the camera flash let you know your favorite contacts (both in Google's phone app and WhatsApp) are getting in touch, complete with custom colors. The lighting also lets you know when Gemini is working. This isn't the most advanced LED system we've seen, but it should help reduce distractions. Pixel 11 price and release date Higher prices are the rule Google is raising prices by $100 to cover the soaring component costs that also affect other brands. The regular Pixel 11 starts at $899, while the 11 Pro and Pro XL, respectively, begin at $1,099 and $1,299. The Pixel 11 Pro Fold matches Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 at $1,899. All the devices are available now for pre-order. The higher baseline storage could help soften the blow, as you're less likely to be forced into a capacity upgrade. However, this also pushes the Pixel 11 series more firmly into high-end phone territory. The days of Google undercutting the competition are largely over. These are flagships, and the best upgrades are reserved for the premium Pro models.
