Google’s original Nest Doorbell is broken for many right now

An issue with Google’s original Nest Doorbell has left live view of the video feed broken for many owners, and there’s no word on a fix just yet. Users are reporting widely in the past few days that Live View video feeds from Nest Doorbells are broken in the Google Home app. The issue is affecting specifically the first-gen Nest Doorbell, which is best known as “Nest Hello,” but Google has been referring to it as “Nest Doorbell (wired, 1st gen).” The issue has popped up in several Reddit threads in recent weeks, but seems to have spread much more widely in the past few days based on nearly a dozen Google support threads we found. Some users also report that some first-gen Nest cameras are also not working properly, but we couldn’t find nearly as many reports of this. Notably, Google did roll out an update to older Nest hardware at the end of October. Interestingly, affected users say that Nest Doorbell notifications on Nest Hub displays are still working properly. Some have deduced that Google’s switch to WebRTC may be the cause of the problem, but it’s hard to say for certain seeing as workarounds based on that theory don’t reliably work. Outside of generic troubleshooting messages, Google has yet to say anything about a fix, or even confirm there’s an issue. But, based on the number of reports, it’s very obvious there’s a problem on Google’s end. We’ll update this post as more details come to light but, for now, sound off in the comments below if you’re running into this issue.
