Google DeepMind Taught AI to Control a Nuclear Fusion Reactor in Real Time

Researchers developed a reinforcement learning system that autonomously controls plasma inside a nuclear fusion tokamak in real time. Instead of relying on traditional hand-engineered controllers, the AI learned to manage all magnetic coils directly, stabilizing complex plasma shapes, advanced fusion configurations, and even dual plasma “droplets” on the TCV reactor.
