The release of Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is repeating a dangerous trend that the last film had to contend with, and that could be a much bigger problem this time around. The Monsterverse movies, featuring the iconic creatures Godzilla and King Kong, have told fantastic and exciting stories, and the franchise only seems to be getting started. The most recent chapter in this interconnected sequence,Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has been a streaming hitafter becoming the highest-grossing entry in the lucrative franchise. While 2014'sGodzillaand 2017'sKong: Skull Islandwere also successful, their earnings were below the most recent 2024 sequel, which brought in a total of $572 million worldwide. With this established, the upcoming Supernova has a chance to be even bigger. The next chapter has been set up by Apple TV's connected sci-fi series Monarch: A Legacy of Monsters, and there is great potential for the forthcoming sequel to perform especially well. However, there is also one significant issue that could make a surprisingly large impact. The Monsterverse films have become sillier through the years. While 2014's Godzilla attempted to take a more contemplative eye toward the relationship between humankind and nature, channeling questions like those seen in the original 1954 Godzilla, the franchise has become much less concerned with ideas and much more with action, which could rub up against a 2026 release. Godzilla X Kong: Supernova's Release Is Just A Few Months After Godzilla Minus Zero Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will release on March 26, 2027, which is only a few months after Toho's next installment debuts domestically on November 6, 2026. While little has been seen of Minus Zero, and even less has been shown of Supernova, both are looking to capture the success of their immediate predecessors. The New Empire is the biggest hit in the Monsterverse to date, and it was released just a few months after Godzilla Minus One came out in 2023. The disparity between those two films was enormous: the former saw Godzilla and Kong teaming up to take down the tyrannical Skar King, while Minus One told a much more human story. Comparing the two stories is surprisingly difficult, and each was a success in its own way. Godzilla Minus One won the franchise its first Oscar ever, and became the highest-grossing Japanese-language Godzilla film. It seems inevitable that some level of competition will be perceived by audiences between the two upcoming sequels, and it might therefore be hard for the upcoming Supernova to live up to the bar that Minus Zero will likely set. Godzilla X Kong Probably Can't Compete With Godzilla Minus Zero's Quality The Rotten Tomatoes score for Minus Zero is among the best in the franchise, boasting a near-perfect 99% with critics and a 98% approval rating with audiences. This is a sharp contrast to The New Empire, which only holds a 54% rating with critics. However, the audience rating for that sequel is still quite high, at 89%. With that said, the two films, and now their respective franchises, are clearly looking to do very different things. Minus Zero is set to continue the human story set by the first film, and continue to look at the Shikishima family in a period setting. The new story looks to be set in New York City. That sequel has been given a bigger budget than its predecessor, and with the same creative team behind it, it has the potential to be just as strong. Meanwhile, Supernova has been saddled with a new director, and only one returning main cast member from the last film in Dan Stevens. Creatively, then, Minus Zero looks to be set up in a way that Supernova is not. This could go a long way in determining the success of each entry. Godzilla Minus Zero Could Be More Successful Than Godzilla X Kong: Supernova With all of this in mind, Godzilla Minus Zero is likely to find great success in ways that the next Monsterverse film will not. Minus One earned a strong $116 million at the global box office, but that film was so warmly received that an uptick in sales looks likely for the upcoming sequel, especially with how well the box office has been performing with the highest-grossing movies of 2026. Supernova will most likely earn more than Minus Zero, as it is an English-language blockbuster film. However, it is also more likely to falter compared to previous chapters. This is the third film combining Godzilla and Kong, and the budget is likely to match or even exceed The New Empire's $135-150 million cost. Anything could happen, and if the marketing for Supernova is strong, the film could wind up being the biggest film in the Monsterverse franchise yet. However, things look especially auspicious for Minus Zero, especially if the new sequel is able to stir up the same kinds of word-of-mouth virality, or perhaps even win additional technical awards for the franchise. With all of that said, however, the good news for Godzilla is that both movies are likely to perform well. Supernova promises to be more like the silliest stories in the Godzilla franchise, while Minus Zero will provide more thoughtful entertainment. This duality of these different kinds of Godzilla stories remains an important force in the franchise. There's Room For Both Kinds Of Godzilla Movies Godzilla has been, and will continue to be, all kinds of different things for all sorts of different people. The Monsterverse iteration of the classic kaiju began as a terrifying force of nature, but has since become much closer to a silly superhero monster fighting against evil. Notably, each of these versions worked in their own ways. Godzilla: King of the Monsters especially gave a much darker look at the world of Godzilla, and it was thoughtful and interesting. But there is also a great deal of room for the chaotic and colorful force that is seen in films like The New Empire. Cartoon shows through the years and even Marvel comics that reimagine Godzilla as Wolverine have used the character in unexpected ways and found great success. All this is to say is that there is room for both. It is great fun to see Godzilla teaming up with King Kong to stomp out more villainous threats, but it is also incredibly rewarding to see thoughtful stories about the state of Japan following World War II like those seen in Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla x Kong: Supernova will likely follow in the footsteps of its immediate predecessor and be a fantastic popcorn movie. Just a few short months after the release of Godzilla Minus Zero, the new outing could be the perfect palate cleanser.
