Sign in to your ScreenRant account Godzilla Minus Zero director Takashi Yamazaki has revealed that Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer directly influenced the creation of his latest monster movie. Following 2023's Godzilla Minus One, the sequel brings Godzilla back to postwar Japan while introducing King Ghidorah as a new threat. The movie goes on to expand its focus on the human consequences of destructive power, particularly through the introduction of Kanji Murakami, played by Min Tanaka. However, Yamazaki has now revealed that the character's storyline was partly inspired by a conversation with one of Hollywood's most acclaimed directors. In an interview with The Direct, Yamazaki explained that he had the opportunity to speak with Nolan during the promotion of Oppenheimer in Japan. The conversation left him wanting to create a cinematic response to Nolan's Oscar-winning historical drama, which ultimately took shape as Godzilla Minus Zero. He explained: "Another point is [that] I had the opportunity to talk to Christopher Nolan when they were promoting Oppenheimer in Japan. In this talk, I felt that I needed to have some kind of response to [Christopher] Nolan's Oppenheimer in the form of a movie, and it manifested as 'Minus Zero.'" Nolan has directed some of the best movies of the 21st century, including Oppenheimer. Released in 2023, the historical drama follows theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, and his involvement in developing the atomic bomb during World War II. The movie explores the moral consequences of creating a weapon capable of unprecedented destruction, a subject that has also been central to the Godzilla franchise since its 1954 debut. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Yamazaki previously elaborated on the connection in an interview with TIME, revealing that he initially considered making a movie directly about Hiroshima following his conversation with Nolan. However, he ultimately realized that Godzilla's longstanding connection to nuclear warfare could allow him to explore those themes within the franchise instead. This decision helped shape Godzilla Minus Zero into his cinematic response to Oppenheimer. Yamazaki's comments also highlight the connection between the two movies through Murakami's storyline. The director explained that he approached the character by imagining how someone living in postwar Japan might respond to suddenly possessing immense power. This question became central to Murakami's arc and reflects the moral dilemmas explored in Nolan's film. Yamazaki further explained that Godzilla serves as a metaphor for war throughout both movies. While Godzilla Minus One's title reflects Japan's devastation following World War II, the sequel continues examining how Kōichi and his family attempt to rebuild their lives while facing another threat. This gives Godzilla Minus Zero a personal perspective on the consequences of war alongside its larger monster battles. Although Godzilla Minus Zero approaches these ideas through science fiction rather than historical drama, both movies examine the responsibilities that come with destructive abilities. Yamazaki's sequel explores these themes through the threat posed by Godzilla and Ghidorah, as well as the decisions made by the people attempting to survive and control them. The revelation also adds another connection between Yamazaki and Nolan, whose respective movies became major awards contenders. Godzilla Minus One won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2024, while Oppenheimer earned seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Godzilla Minus Zero is currently playing in theaters.
