The original Kaiju's renaissance era continues to prove that Godzilla can go anywhere, do anything, and fight anyone. From deep space, to alternate realities, and even to the Marvel Universe, and now, to just about the last place fans would expect to find Godzilla wreaking havoc. With the success of Godzilla Minus One, the franchise found renewed critical appreciation and struck a chord with a new generation of fans. Now, with Godzilla Minus Zero set to hit theaters next month, the hype surrounding Godzilla is growing to Kaiju proportions. Add to that the fact that Godzilla has become a dominant force in comics over the last couple of years as well. IDW Publishing has been on a prolific run of Godzilla stories, most notable for its flexibility. Godzilla has been put in some surprising situations lately, often thanks to Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theater, each installment of which has been a treat. The latest, Kaiju of Oz, finds the King of the Monsters tearing its way through the Emerald City. Warning! Spoilers ahead for Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theater: Kaiju of Oz! Godzilla Invades Oz Alongside Dorothy & Changes Everything Fans Know About The Classic Tale Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theater: Kaiju of Oz #1, By Mike Costa & Ryan Browne Check out the full synopsis for Kaiju of Oz: Welcome to the Wonderful Land of Oz — where houses fall from the sky, scarecrows and tin men come to life, witches rule from specific compass directions, and... Godzilla reigns supreme?! That’s right, Godzilla is finally coming to Emerald City to meet the Wizard, and once it’s here, every land will be Munchkinland. Maybe the Cowardly Lion was on to something. Oz is a recognizable fictional setting, beloved from the Frank Baum books, the 1939 Wizard of Oz film, and most recently updated in the Wicked films. Making it an amazing location for Godzilla to smash through. One of the many smart creative decisions in Kaiju of Oz is to emphasize this. Starting from when Godzilla's foot obliterates Dorothy's house moments after it lands on the Wicked Witch of the East, up through a spectacular final battle between the Wizard of Oz and the King of the Monsters. Without giving too much away, Emerald City doesn't go down without a fight. When a reimagining of a classic story is firing on all cylinders, like Kaiju of Oz does, every subversion of the original text is as satisfying as every callback to it. The issue starts out following The Wizard of Oz as a road map, but by the time it gets to the Yellow Brick Road, all bets are off, and Kaiju of Oz becomes increasingly surprising and spectacular. Godzilla X Wizard Of Oz Is The Latest Certified "Monsterpiece" From IDW Publishing Godzilla's Monsterpiece Theater: Kaiju of Oz #1 is a meaty, 40+ page book, but it is a quick, thoroughly enjoyable read. The magic of Kaiju of Oz comes from blending the familiar iconography of Oz with the creative team's own unique vision of the setting. Then, having Godzilla rampage through it as only the King of the Monsters can do. Kaiju of Oz strikes a perfect balance in a lot of ways. Between the two franchises it is merging together. Between humor and gravitas. Between action and exposition. Between self-awareness of its own absurdity and playing it straight. From the moment Dorothy and Toto hop on Godzilla's back to hitch a ride, readers will be locked in and ready to follow the story wherever it takes them. Godzilla has had a bunch of crossovers lately, courtesy of IDW Publishing, as well as Marvel Comics, and the creators of these stories keep finding ways to outdo themselves. Kaiju of Oz is just the latest, greatest example. Godzilla's Masterpiece Theater Presents: The Kaiju of Oz #1 is available now.
