The solid waste is primarily plastic bottles and materials used for performing puja on the banks of the river, officials said. East Godavari District Collector Ch. Kirthi on Friday (November 6, 2026) unveiled the action plan for Godavari Pushkarams-2027, which was drafted by 22 government departments, during a virtual meeting attended by Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar and other officials. She claimed that around 80 lakh devotees are expected to take part in the pushkarams per day; 60 lakh in the urban bodies, mostly in Rajamahendravaram city, and 20 lakh in the rural areas along the banks of river Godavari.Ms. Kirthi stated that at least 20,000 toilets will be provided and 8,000 sanitation staff will be deployed to ensure safe sanitary conditions for the devotees. “Five-kilometre-long temporary ghats will be developed along the Godavari river banks, facilitating the devotees to take a holy dip and to maintain low density of devotees as part of crowd management,” she said. On promoting cultural diversity, the Godavari Pushkarams-2028 action plan recommends featuring Kuchipudi performed by nearly 30,000 performers brought from across the State.
