Sign in to your TheGamer account Sony Santa Monica has announced that God of War Laufey has been hit with a fairly sizeable three-month delay, with a new release date of May 20. The impending release of the biggest video game in history (Grand Theft Auto 6, as if I even have to say it) has had a massive impact on both 2026's and 2027's release calendars. On the 2026 side, September was absolutely stuffed with notable releases, including The Blood of Dawnwalker, Marvel's Wolverine, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword, while 2027 has made February the new hot spot for launches. For some time now, February of next year has looked like an absolute monstrosity for gamers thanks to Persona 4 Revival, Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, Fable, and my personal most-anticipated, God of War Laufey. It was really only a matter of time before one of those games packed its bags for later in the year and, lucky me, it's the next God of War that's being shifted. God Of War Laufey Pushed Out Of February And Into May Santa Monica Wants Laufey To Reach Its "Full Potential" Earlier today, Santa Monica Studio shared a statement regarding God of War Laufey's release date, which was previously set for February 16. That's no longer the case as of today, though, as the developer has decided to push the next God of War game back by three months to a new release date of May 20. Santa Monica says that this was done because it doesn't "take for granted the trust placed in the studio to make an extraordinary experience" that's worthy of the passion fans have shown so far. The team will spend the extra three months "putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential". Considering Laufey was basically right around the corner with its old release date, it's a bit of a surprise to see it so suddenly hit with a decently sized delay. While I'm sure that extra polish is the main factor behind the pushback, it's possible that PlayStation saw the crowded lineup and decided to give Faye's journey through Everywhen a bit more space.
