As a last minute change ahead of next week's GNOME 51 desktop release, changes to Mutter and gsettings-desktop-schemas have now landed for supporting custom pointer acceleration profiles. This is making use of libinput's ability to support user-defined custom acceleration profiles for pointer movement. These custom profiles can allow for adjusting the speed based upon the movement types like pointer movement, scrolling, etc. Libinput allows for full control over the acceleration behavior at different speeds as an alternative to the default flat acceleration. All the details can be found via the libinput documentation. With this merge to gsettings-desktop-schemas, the schema addition is in place for enabling custom acceleration profiles. That merge request was open since February 2025. On the Mutter side was this merge finally taking place yesterday after similarly being open since February 2025. That gets the Mutter native backend all ready with supporting custom acceleration profiles in conjunction with libinpuut. GNOME 51 is slated for its official release on 16 September and will be found out-of-the-box on the likes of Ubuntu 26.10 and Fedora Workstation 45.
