Friday’s feature is the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes over 5f, a division that is lacking start quality, and a shock win would not be a surprise. The supporting programme is every bit as compelling. The Thoroughbred Stakes gives several progressive three-year-olds another opportunity to advertise their Group 1 credentials later in the campaign, while the Bonhams Golden Mile Handicap once again provides one of the toughest betting puzzles of the entire week. Believeitanducan arrives at the top of his game after winning all three of his Flat starts this season. A three-time winner over hurdles, the Alan King-trained gelding has no obvious concerns over stamina and has already succeeded over a similar distance on soft ground at Plumpton. His current run of form makes him one of the obvious starting points. He has travelled strongly, responded generously under pressure and shown the ability to adapt to different race conditions. A fourth consecutive victory is entirely possible. Willie Mullins sends over Highwind, who shaped with promise when fourth behind Reverend Hubert at the Curragh last month. He has yet to win on turf for Mullins, although he did score on the all-weather during his time in France. That latest Curragh effort suggested he remains competitive from his current mark, and the longer trip may bring about further improvement. If building on that performance, Highwind has each-way claims. However, preference is for Tony Martin’s ALPHONSE LE GRANDE. The gelding won the Cesarewitch at Newmarket in 2024 from this exact mark, proving both his stamina and his ability to perform in a major staying handicap. His recent fifth behind Believeitanducan at Newcastle was more encouraging than the bare result suggests, as he stayed on steadily and looked as though the outing would bring him forward. That run had the appearance of a prep race, and it would be no surprise if this contest had been in Martin’s mind for some time. The trainer has a long history of targeting valuable staying handicaps, and his runners are always worth noting when they arrive at major summer festivals. Having already landed a significant Flat prize at Galway this week, the stable appears to be in good form. Alphonse Le Grande is proven from this mark, stays strongly and should be suited by the likely pace. At a double-figure price, he looks an appealing each-way proposition. Definitely, Maxi King and St Mawes are others with solid claims in a highly competitive opener. He travelled strongly before staying on through the closing stages, suggesting the extra furlong should suit. However, he faces a rival with a much stronger form profile in TALK OF NEW YORK. The son of Wootton Bassett has won three of his five career starts and has already shown that he belongs in top company. His standout effort came in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, where he finished just over a length behind Bow Echo. That form sets a clear standard and leaves his six rivals with plenty to find. He remains lightly raced, and there is every reason to believe further improvement is still to come. The return to Group 3 level represents a significant easing in company and should provide him with an ideal opportunity to get back into the winner’s enclosure. Shayem, runner-up in the German 2,000 Guineas before winning at Listed level at Newmarket, looks the most likely to follow him home, but Talk Of New York should have too much class if reproducing his Royal Ascot effort. A 5lb rise appears fair, and he remains capable of further improvement, but the market has reacted accordingly, and there may be better value elsewhere. Handicap debutant Bunyola Bay is another fascinating runner. He landed the valuable Gowran Classic in June before finding the Irish Derby too demanding, racing too freely and failing to settle into the race. That effort can be forgiven, and a return to handicap company should suit. If relaxing more effectively, he has the talent to play a major role. However, the vote goes to TRIBAL CHIEF, who returns to the scene of his latest victory. He is not entirely straightforward and can lose valuable ground at the start, but when breaking on terms he is a highly capable performer. Tribal Chief won at this meeting last year, proving his effectiveness around Goodwood, and Jamie Spencer now takes over in the saddle. Spencer’s patient style could be ideally suited to a horse who needs to settle before being delivered late. There are clear risks attached, but his course form, finishing speed and current mark make him difficult to ignore. If leaving the stalls cleanly and finding a smooth passage through the field, Tribal Chief has the ability to arrive late and land another course-and-distance success. Mister Winston and Classic are others capable of outrunning their prices in a typically deep renewal. A strong case can be made for several runners, but each also arrives with questions to answer. Former Group 1 winner Asfoora is the class act on the pick of her form, yet she has looked below her best this season. After 33 career starts, it is possible that her peak performances are beginning to sit behind her. She remains capable of bouncing back, but at the likely prices she is difficult to trust. Night Raider is among the more progressive sprinters in the line-up. He arrives after two victories and a respectable effort when beaten just over two lengths in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot. Dropping back into Group 2 company gives him an obvious chance, and he should again be involved if reproducing that form. However, preference is for defending champion JM JUNGLE. He finished two lengths ahead of Night Raider in this race last season and once again demonstrated his liking for Goodwood when holding off She’s Quality despite conceding 3lb. The performance showed his toughness and ability to handle the unique demands of the track. Few five-furlong races require such a combination of speed, balance and stamina, and JM Jungle has already proved he possesses all three. His preparation for this year’s renewal has also been encouraging. He was beaten only half a length at Listed level on his latest start and shaped as though that run would put him spot on for this target. Course form counts for plenty at Goodwood, particularly in a sprint where the race can unfold quickly, and experience of the downhill track is a major advantage. In an open division, JM Jungle looks one of the more reliable options at a double-figure price. Fellow course-and-distance winner Spicy Marg is another who could outrun her odds. He does have winning form over a mile at Goodwood and could be involved if building on his Royal Ascot return. Haatem brings stronger established form, but his latest effort in the Wolferton Stakes was disappointing as he attempted to win the race for a second successive year. He was repeatedly denied a clear run, so excuses can be made. The selection is GALEN, who has repeatedly shown that he is capable of mixing it at this level. Haatem narrowly denied him in the 2025 Wolferton, and Galen again shaped well when fourth in this season’s renewal. That effort came on his first start after 122 days away from the track, and he is fully entitled to improve with the benefit of the outing. He travelled well for much of the race and was not beaten far, suggesting his ability remains intact. With fitness now on his side, he should be able to take a significant step forward. Galen has not won since defeating Jan Brueghel at the Curragh last season, but that piece of form demonstrates the level he can reach when at his best. The trip suits; he is likely to get a stronger gallop than at Royal Ascot, and he now arrives with a run under his belt. Innichen brings proven handicap form after making a successful debut in that sphere at Nottingham earlier this month. That was his second victory from four career starts, but the handicapper has reacted with an 8lb rise. The increase appears harsh on face value, and his new mark demands another significant step forward. The booking of Ryan Moore aboard Dubai Champion catches the eye. The Ben Haslam-trained colt arrives after a convincing success at Hamilton and could be well treated from an opening mark of 83. He travelled strongly and showed a professional attitude when asked to quicken, suggesting there may be plenty more to come. Paper View seeks a hat-trick and commands respect, but preference is for Andrew Balding’s THE DANCING PIRATE. The son of Blackbeard has yet to win, but he produced his best effort when finishing behind the impressive Stardom Glory on his latest start. He showed more speed and professionalism that day, and the form looks strong enough to give him a chance from an opening mark of 84. That rating is not obviously lenient, but the switch into handicap company could suit a colt who has been learning with each run. With further improvement expected, The Dancing Pirate can make his handicap debut a successful one. He remains consistent and is likely to run his race again, but others bring greater potential for improvement. The standout candidate here is INTO THE LIGHT. He was strongly fancied at 4/1 for the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, but his chance was compromised almost immediately. A slow start left him further back than ideal, and he then encountered traffic problems when attempting to improve. That effort can be forgiven, and the form of the race has worked out well, strengthening the case that he remains on a competitive mark. His earlier form has also received boosts, and the son of Dubawi still looks like a colt with more to offer. The slight drop in trip will be no problem, and he has the class to make amends for his Royal Ascot disappointment. Pierian is an interesting handicap debutant, while Parisian Scholar arrives chasing a hat-trick and cannot be dismissed. Room Fourteen arrives after winning three of her last four starts and remains on an upward curve. Ryan Moore takes over in the saddle, and there is every chance she can continue progressing, but she faces a rival who may be especially well treated. SILVER LAKE made a successful handicap debut at Salisbury, defeating a previous winner in decisive fashion. The pair pulled nine lengths clear of the third, giving the form a strong look, and Silver Lake appeared to improve significantly for stepping up in distance. The handicapper has raised her only 2lb, which could prove very lenient considering the authority of the performance. She travelled comfortably, quickened when asked and stayed on strongly through the line, suggesting the mile-and-a-quarter trip suits her perfectly. Saffie Osborne takes over in the saddle and arrives at Goodwood after an excellent spell, making the booking another positive. Silver Lake remains lightly raced and could have considerably more improvement to come. If reproducing her Salisbury form, she may prove difficult to beat from her revised mark. Whisper needs to leave a disappointing Windsor run behind, but she began her season with a victory and still looks fairly treated. However, Silver Lake can provide Osborne with a fitting conclusion to a productive week on the Sussex Downs.
