Valedictory is one of the least exposed runners in the field and comes here on the back of two authoritative staying victories. He has been raised only 3lb for his latest success and returns to a course and distance at which he has already proved effective. That profile makes him one of the obvious starting points. He travels strongly, sees out the trip well and appears to be progressing with each start. It would be no surprise were he to take another step forward from his revised mark. However, preference is for former winner ALIGN THE STARS, who appears to have rediscovered his best form. The son of Sea The Stars made a successful return at Kempton from a mark of 92 before confirming that revival with a strong-staying victory in the valuable Northumberland Plate. That performance marked him down as a horse firmly back on an upward curve. He travelled comfortably, responded generously under pressure and stayed on strongly to settle matters in the closing stages. Align The Stars now returns to a mark of 101, only 2lb higher than when landing this race in 2024. That is significant given he arrives in much stronger form than he did at several points last season. He is versatile regarding tactics and ground, proven over the course and distance and clearly operating close to the peak of his powers once again. Small Fry has been running himself back into form for Joseph O’Brien and shaped with promise when sixth in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot. If building on that effort from the same mark, he is capable of reaching the frame. Stressfree and Burdett Road are others worth considering at double-figure prices. Valedictory remains a major danger, but Align The Stars has the proven course form and current wellbeing to land the race for a second time. He defeated subsequent Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Rahiebb last season before confirming his improvement with success in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot. As a four-year-old, he remains open to further progress and deserves enormous respect now moving into Pattern company. However, this represents a significant rise in grade and the more dependable option is the admirable AL AASY. The nine-year-old has built an outstanding record at Group 3 level, winning six races in this grade and repeatedly showing that this is the level at which he is most comfortable. He also boasts an exceptional record in this contest, having won the last two renewals, including a runaway success 12 months ago. Al Aasy warmed up for his hat-trick bid with a comfortable Listed victory, a performance that suggested William Haggas has once again brought him to peak condition for Goodwood. The course and distance clearly suit him. He settles well, travels strongly and possesses the turn of foot required to make an impact in the short home straight. Although Opportunity could still be improving, he must now prove himself against a seasoned Group performer who excels under these exact conditions. In My Teens looked a colt on the rise when landing a Premier Handicap at the Curragh. Should he receive the strong gallop he needs, he could be the one to cause an upset. Selection: Al Aasy 7/4 (NAP) Danger: Opportunity 10/3 ➡️ Bet on AL AASY for the Group 3 Coral Glorious Stakes at 7/4 with Betfred Glorious Goodwood 3:00 – Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4yo+) – 1m6f Last season’s winner Waardah returned with a highly encouraging effort behind subsequent Group 1 winner Estrange at Carlisle in May. That form alone gives her strong claims, and her perfect two-from-two record at Goodwood adds further weight to her case. She clearly handles the track, stays the trip and has already shown herself capable of performing at this level. On the pick of her form, she is an obvious contender. However, preference is for SANTORINI STAR, who has established herself as one of the most reliable staying fillies and mares in training. The daughter of Golden Horde is also a course winner and announced herself as a serious stayer when landing the valuable Sky Bet Stayers Handicap at York last season. She subsequently filled the runner-up spot behind Consent at both Group 2 and Group 1 level, proving that her progress was not confined to handicap company. Santorini Star returned this season with a Group 2 victory at Newmarket before being denied by the narrowest of margins in a Group 1 at Longchamp. Those performances confirmed that she has developed into a high-class staying mare capable of competing at the top level. Her latest run at Royal Ascot can be forgiven. She missed the break, found herself immediately on the back foot and was eased once her chance had gone. That effort was too poor to be taken literally and came in circumstances that never allowed her to race with her customary rhythm. Back in a smaller field, there is every chance she will be able to dictate or at least secure a prominent position without using excessive energy. The likely race shape should suit her far better, and she now has an excellent opportunity to reverse previous form with old rival Consent. Selection: Santorini Star 9/2 Danger: Waardah 11/4 ➡️ Bet on SANTORINI STAR for the Group 2 Coral Glorious Stakes at 9/2 with bet365 Glorious Goodwood 3:35 – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) (3yo+) – 6f The Stewards’ Cup is once again a formidable betting puzzle, with a maximum field of 29 charging down Goodwood’s six-furlong track. Last year’s winner Two Tribes returns from a mark 9lb higher than when landing the prize 12 months ago. He arrives in good form after chasing home the progressive Amazing Journey last week and has been raised only 2lb for that effort. His proven course form is an obvious positive and he cannot be dismissed despite his higher rating. Former Group 3 winner Annaf is another to consider. He is now rated 6lb lower than his peak mark and has shaped with encouragement on his last two starts. If returning to anything close to his best, he would be a major player in a race of this nature. Dark Thirty and Stratusnine also bring solid claims, but the vote goes to the in-form SONDAD. The Mick and David Easterby-trained gelding has won two of his last three starts and arrives at the top of his game. That sequence includes a victory over Dark Thirty at the Curragh, and there was much to like about the way he travelled before finding enough under pressure. Sondad is now competing from a career-high mark of 105, but there are reasons to believe he remains capable of defying it. He is straightforward, tough and genuine, three qualities that can prove invaluable in a race where many of his rivals are less reliable. If enjoying a clear run through the field, he looks likely to be involved in the finish once again. Two Tribes commands respect as the defending champion, but Sondad’s current form and uncomplicated profile earn him the vote. He has since been gelded and may be capable of leaving that performance behind, but at the current prices there are safer options elsewhere. Egoli returned to form at Doncaster and should be suited by the likely setup of this race. He also ran better than the bare result when contesting Group 2 company over six furlongs at Goodwood last season. Drawn on the wrong side, he still managed to lead home his group, and that course experience could prove useful. However, preference is for NAVAL LIGHT, who appears to have turned a corner in recent months. The son of Havana Grey looked better than ever when scoring at Catterick, winning with more in hand than the official margin suggests. He travelled comfortably, responded well when asked and gave the impression he could have found more had it been required. The handicapper has raised him 5lb, which appears fair rather than excessive. Naval Light remains lightly raced and has finished outside the first three only twice in his career, highlighting his consistency. He also boasts previous Goodwood form, having finished second at the track as a juvenile. That experience should stand him in good stead in a race where balance and track position are likely to prove important. His prominent racing style could allow him to secure a useful early position, and he appears to possess enough stamina to remain strong over the seven-furlong trip. Ironwill and handicap debutant Wild Desert are others capable of making their presence felt. Selection: Naval Light 10/1 Danger: Wild Desert 7/1 ➡️ Bet on NAVAL LIGHT for the Phase Eight Handicap at 10/1 with Betway Glorious Goodwood 4:45 – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (Colts and Geldings) (Class 2) (2yo) – 7f Aidan O’Brien sends over Speakers Corner, who failed to justify market confidence on debut but is entitled to improve significantly with that experience behind him. Ballydoyle juveniles regularly take a major step forward from first to second start, although Speakers Corner looked one-paced in the closing stages and may not be seen to best effect until moving up in distance. The one to side with is AL WATHBA. The Godolphin colt found Haffner too strong on debut at Newmarket but had to concede valuable experience to that rival. Haffner has since enhanced the form by finishing second in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday, giving Al Wathba’s first appearance a particularly solid look. The son of Wootton Bassett travelled with promise but still showed signs of greenness when pressure was applied. That experience should bring him forward considerably, and the move to seven furlongs looks likely to suit. Godolphin juveniles often improve markedly on their second appearance, and Al Wathba already possesses a level of form that sets a useful standard. If settling more effectively and breaking on terms, he could prove extremely difficult to beat. Charted Course appears the best of those with experience, while any significant support for one of the newcomers should be noted. Richard Hannon’s Boyfriend has been in excellent form this season and may have found a mile and a quarter stretching his stamina at Sandown last time. The return to 1m1f should suit him better, and if arriving in the same form after a short break, he looks likely to play a leading role. Course-and-distance winner Alpha Crucis has dropped to a workable mark, although quicker underfoot conditions may not play to his strengths. The one who makes most appeal is CREST OF FIRE. The Jack Channon-trained gelding’s latest runner-up effort has already been strongly advertised by the winner, Ciarrai Abu, who followed up at this meeting on Thursday. Crest Of Fire looked better than ever when narrowly denied by that progressive rival at Ascot. He travelled strongly, moved into contention smoothly and battled all the way to the line. A 4lb rise demands more, but the strength of the form suggests the handicapper may not have been overly harsh. The three-year-old remains open to further improvement and should be suited by the likely strong pace. Goodwood’s 1m1f trip appears ideal for a horse who travels like a miler but finishes his races with enough stamina to suggest the extra furlong is in his favour. Great Chieftain and Ammes are others capable of running well at bigger prices. Boyfriend remains a serious danger, but Crest Of Fire looks to be progressing at the right time and can end the meeting on a winning note.
