Git 2.56-rc0 Released With Updated Contribution Guidelines, Improvements For Swift

While still ultimately working toward Git 3.0 with SHA-256 hashes by default and the "main" branch name by default, among other breaking changes (and potentially coming around the end of 2026), Git 2.56-rc0 is now available for testing. For Git 2.56, the ORT merge back-end has been hardened against corrupt trees along with many other low-level improvements and other enhancements for this distributed revision control system. On the developer side, Git 2.56 adds userdiff patterns for the Swift programming language. There are now Swift-specific constructs around attributes, modifiers, failable initializers, and generics added to Git for improved diff presentation. Git 2.56 also now ships a project-specific configuration for b4. This new configuration is recommended for streamlining patch submission for Git. The new Git release also updated the documentation for its community contribution guidelines. Among the updates there are encouraging users to wait at least one day before re-rolling new versions of patches on the mailing list, to allow sufficient time for reviewers to look at one version of the patches. The updated documentation also lays out facts like contributors should discuss their planned response in an existing review thread rather than just submitting a new version of the patches without closing the loop on the old discussion thread. The documentation also recommends the use of b4 for making contributions, using shallow threading of cover letters, and other recommendations.
