Giles Terera to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in West End’s A Christmas Carol

Award-winning actor Giles Terera will star as Ebenezer Scrooge in a West End production of A Christmas Carol.Best known for his award-winning turn as Aaron Burr in the West End production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit musical Hamilton, Terera, 49, will appear at the Old Vic later this year in the stage adaptation of the Charles Dickens’ classic.Directed by Matthew Warchus, the production was adapted by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne, and will run from November 10 until January 9.The Old Vic theatre announced the casting on Thursday and posted on Instagram: “Here comes Mr Humbug.“We’re thrilled to announce that Olivier Award winner Giles Terera will play Ebenezer Scrooge in this year’s A Christmas Carol.”A Christmas Carol tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy man who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet To Come.The festive tale is currently being adapted for the big screen in Ti West’s Ebenezer, a dark fantasy version of the classic novella, starring Hollywood star Johnny Depp as the bitter miser who despises Christmas.Terera has a lengthy list of theatre credits, but it was his performance as US vice-president Burr in Hamilton that won him the 2018 Olivier award for best actor in a musical.Giles Terera (Jonathan Brady/PA)PA ArchiveHe also starred in productions of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Oh, Mary!, and Blues For An Alabama Sky.He wrote and starred in his debut play, The Meaning Of Zong, about how Olaudah Equiano joined forces with anti-slavery campaigner Granville Sharp to publicly condemn the massacre aboard the slave ship Zong, during which 132 Africans were thrown overboard, setting in motion events which led to the abolition movement in the UK.Terera was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2021 for his services to theatre.
