Giants Select Cesar Perdomo

The Giants announced that they have recalled catcher Zach Morgan from Triple-A Sacramento and selected the contract of left-hander Cesar Perdomo. Those will be the club’s two additions as active rosters expand from 26 to 28 today. To open a 40-man spot for Perdomo, right-hander Adrian Houser has been transferred to the 60-day injured list. Prior to the official announcement, Justice delos Santos of Mercury News noted that Morgan and Perdomo had lockers in the clubhouse. Perdomo, 24, was an international signing out of Venezuela in 2021. He has been climbing the minor league ladder since then. He finished last year at High-A but has reached the upper levels here in 2026, splitting his time between Double-A and Triple-A. He has thrown a total of 120 innings this year over 24 appearances, 22 of those officially being starts. He has allowed 4.43 earned runs per nine while striking out 24.6% of batters faced and giving out walks at an 8.3% clip. Baseball America currently lists Perdomo as the #30 prospect in the system. Their report highlights his fastball and changeup as his top pitches, though his slider also gets some complimentary words. Though he has been working as a starter, the Giants will likely deploy Perdomo as a long reliever for now. Since this is his first time on a major league roster, he has a full slate of options and can be shuttled to Triple-A and back fairly freely for the foreseeable future. As for Morgan, he was added to the 40-man roster in August but was optioned the next day without getting into a game, so he is still looking to make his major league debut. The Giants have Drew Cavanaugh and Andrew Knizner on the roster, so Morgan gives them a third backstop for the stretch run. Houser just hit the 15-day IL a few days ago with a right forearm strain. His timeline isn’t clear but this transfer officially ends his season. The Giants signed him in the winter to a two-year, $22MM deal. So far, it hasn’t really worked out. Houser started the year in the rotation but struggled enough to get bumped to the bullpen in June. He had some success at that point and the Giants opened some rotation spots by trading Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle ahead of the deadline. That got Houser some more starting work but he became injured shortly thereafter. In total, Houser tossed 109 2/3 innings this year with a 4.02 ERA, 16% strikeout rate, 7.2% walk rate and 43.3% ground ball rate. That’s not awful production but the Giants were surely hoping for more after their investment. At the moment, the Giants have a fairly open rotation group going into next year. Logan Webb and Landen Roupp are in two spots but there’s not much certainty beyond that. Houser has a path to a better campaign in the second season of his contract but he probably won’t be guaranteed anything and the Giants could also make notable additions in the offseason.
