Giants Outright Three Players

The Giants outrighted left-hander Matt Gage, right-hander Jason Foley and infielder Osleivis Basabe off the 40-man roster, per a team announcement. San Francisco also lost outfielder Grant McCray and righty Braxton Roxby on waivers — McCray to the Mariners and Roxby to the Nationals. Gage and Foley are veteran relievers who’ve run into injury troubles. Elbow problems limited the former to only 27 1/3 innings this year, during which he posted a 5.60 ERA with an unsightly 17.5% strikeout rate and 13.5% walk rate. He’d been effective in parts of three prior seasons, logging a 2.66 ERA in 50 2/3 innings between the Jays, Astros, Tigers and Giants — albeit with a roughly average 22% strikeout rate and a higher-than-average 9.8% walk rate. Gage had a 1.96 ERA through the season’s first two months before being mauled for 12 runs in his final 4 1/3 innings. He’s reportedly expected to have a normal offseason, but the Giants had a staggering 16 players on the 60-day injured list and need to open a huge number of roster spots, so Gage will fall to the wayside. Foley signed with San Francisco while recovering from 2025 surgery to repair a capsule strain/tear in his right shoulder. He made his season debut in mid-July and pitched to a 4.15 ERA in 26 innings. His 12.8% strikeout rate was well shy of typical levels, however, while his 9.4% walk rate was quite high by his standards; from 2023-25, Foley fanned 18.4% of his opponents with just a 5.9% walk rate. He still generated plenty of grounders with San Francisco but on top of the shaky K/BB profile, his velocity was down more than a mile per hour from his prior days in Detroit. Basabe, a 26-year-old infielder, got a brief look with the 2023 Rays. He hadn’t appeared in the majors since — until the Giants called him up this year. He hit .202/.268/.341 in 143 turns at the plate and now carries a career .208/.271/.329 slash in 237 big league plate appearances. He posted quality minor league numbers up through the Double-A level but has never hit Triple-A pitching much and has obviously been miles from even league-average production at the game’s top level. All three of Gage, Foley and Basabe will become minor league free agents and search for new opportunities in free agency this winter. View Comments (0)
