In a market full of incredible writers, Lucy Foley manages to stand out with her tense, taut tales that build slowly and take you this way, that way and every other way. I’ve loved everything she’s ever written and in my opinion each book is better than the one before. Somehow, she manages to create characters that you love to hate – but you’re still invested in. The Midnight Feast is the mum-of-two’s fourth crime thriller; she used to write historical novels before her books took a more sinister turn. She’s often referred to as a millennial Agatha Christie because her stories generally take place in an isolated setting with a small cast of suspects. Whereas Agatha Christie’s novels were slightly cosier, Foley’s tales are darker and messier – and that’s just the way I like it. Even when you think you’ve worked out the twist, she somehow manages to catch you out again and again. Other modern day comparisons include Lisa Jewell, Ruth Ware and B.A. Paris. In this foreboding tale, she introduces readers to Francesca Meadows. The wellness guru, wife and owner of The Manor has achieved everything she ever dreamed of – and more. Her latest venture is a countryside retreat destined for huge success because Francesca has the Midas touch and doesn’t let anything – or anybody – stand in her way. Francesca is awful: rude, false and so incredibly pleased with herself that you can’t help but hope for her downfall. Everything she does is so contrived and Foley writes her inauthenticity brilliantly. As the entitled guests gather for the launch party which takes place over a boiling hot solstice, they’re caught up in the excitement of the event and utterly oblivious to Francesca’s dark side or the rising tensions in the neighbourhood where the resort is opening. The locals feel that Francesca and her team have used their money and status to trample over their rights – and they’re right. But they’re not going to take her behaviour lying down and have planned to disrupt Francesca’s little soiree as often as possible. They also have an ally. One guest, Bella is determined that Frankie, as Francesca used to be known, should pay for her nasty past. The two women met 15 years ago as young girls and Bella hasn’t ever forgiven or forgotten what happened that long ago summer. As day turns into night there’s a murder that nobody anticipated in such a beautiful setting. Who had a reason to kill? So many people have motives but you might be surprised when you discover who went through with it. I’ve always championed Lucy’s books and I think they get better every time. The Midnight Feast is one that should be on your list if you like slow burning, foreboding tales with a dose of the supernatural thrown in for good measure.
