The Democratic Party’s sweep into power in the 2026 midterm elections means Democrats will spend the next two years planning the extreme power grabs they have been agitating for, to be carried out if they retake the White House in 2028.Democrats have secured 54 Senate seats and could add two more in Alaska and Mississippi, cementing a wipeout victory that could see them hold the Senate for at least four years. (The 2028 Senate map is not favorable for the Republican Party). That includes adding Democratic senators from traditional GOP strongholds Texas, Kansas, and Iowa, along with the possible victory in Mississippi and the win in Ohio, which more recently became a “solid” red state. With 54 to 56 Senate seats and control of the House of Representatives, Democrats are once again going to begin discussing rigging the electoral system in their favor. Since 2016, Democrats have floated abolishing the Electoral College, rigging the Senate in their favor by making Washington, D.C., a state and granting it two Democratic senators, and packing the Supreme Court with left-wing justices who issue whatever rulings the Democratic Party wants. These were not fringe ideas floated by backbench Democratic representatives, but major proposals floated among the 2020 Democratic presidential primary field. For example, packing the court was floated by current Sens. Cory Booker (D-NJ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), as well as eventual 2024 nominee Kamala Harris and likely 2028 candidate Pete Buttigieg. Booker, Warren, Buttigieg, and Gillibrand all outright endorsed eliminating the Electoral College, and Harris and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) were warm to the idea as well. The official Democratic National Committee platform in 2024 endorsed statehood for Washington, D.C.DEMOCRATS RAN RADICALS AND STILL WON. DON’T BLAME THE CANDIDATES — TRUMP OWNS THIS BLOODBATHThese are the new mainstream Democratic positions, and, given that Democrats have spent the last decade talking about the “threat to democracy” posed by President Donald Trump and the GOP, you can expect those conversations to be front and center going forward. If Democrats win the presidency in 2028, why would they not have their likely one-off senators in Texas, Kansas, and Iowa burn their political goodwill by rigging the system in the Democratic Party’s favor for decades to come, much as Democrats sacrificed senators in Arkansas, Indiana, and North Dakota to pass Obamacare?Democrats are going to attempt to push this ball forward if Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), or Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) wins the presidency in 2028. The Democratic Party is already emboldened and has shown time and time again that it will vote in lockstep when the time comes, which means the 2028 elections will be a battle for the future of the country’s foremost institutions.
